Some Thoughts on AI Agents With the fast growth of agentic AI systems, I see a lot of misconceptions, among AI enthusiasts, founders, and even investors. Many think that LLMs and AI agents are the same thing. But calling an LLM via API or building a custom model isn’t the same thing of creating an agent. Yes, LLMs are a core component, but agents require additional capabilities, such as: - Planning: The system can break down tasks to reach a goal. - Memory: The system can leverage short-term memory (e.g., prompt engineering) and long-term memory (e.g., RAG). - Tool use: The system can interact with external tools (APIs) to execute actions. If one of these elements is missing, you’re probably not working with a true AI agent. In simple words, an AI agent can make decisions, that often you can’t even predict, to achieve a goal. At @BrianknowsAI, our team has built various features, the most known being the "send transaction" one, which executes transactions based on natural language queries. Due to the high-stakes nature of this domain (where errors could mean financial loss), it’s critical we understand how this feature behaves. The current version of Brian is indeed an intent recognition engine, that understands user intent and allows him/her to execute transactions with one click. For example, if you ask Brian to "swap 5 USDC for WETH," it will either recognize the intent, parse it correctly, and run the transaction, or it will fail gracefully (nothing happens). Brian doesn’t make independent decisions or perform other transactions because he "thinks" that other actions could benefit the user in reaching his/her goal. This makes Brian an excellent third-party API for integrating with your AI agent system. Recently, my co-founder @orbuloeth demonstrated how you can create such an agent in just a few lines of code x.com/orbuloeth/stat…. Why you should use Brian in your AI Agent system? Due to the time-consuming reasoning breakdown that these agents perform, it's essential that the tools they use are both fast and reliable, especially if your goal is to create a viable product for the market. As Lilian Weng says: "Current agent system relies on natural language as an interface between LLMs and external components such as memory and tools. However, the reliability of model outputs is questionable, as LLMs may make formatting errors and occasionally exhibit rebellious behavior (e.g. refuse to follow an instruction). Consequently, much of the agent demo code focuses on parsing model output." At Brian, we're optimizing our intent recognition engine with a custom web3 domain- specific LLM, allowing faster, more accurate parsing for web3 contexts than larger models like ChatGPT. This means more speed and reliability. When Should You Invest in an AI Agent Project? As mentioned, an AI agent is more than just an LLM. If someone claims they have the best agent, ask for evidence. While there are benchmarks for LLMs (e.g., huggingface.co/spaces/open-ll…), there’s no universal benchmark for agents. The best signal that a team is worth your time? Ask questions such as: Do you have data to demonstrate your agent performs better than others? Do you have a plan to show the improvement of your system over time? Some slogans on a landing page are not enough, it's just believing in the words of some AI agent expert...
