@Vfynn_ The irony in a pundit criticizing a player for not dealing well with criticism then getting upset over being unfollowed on social media.....

🚨🎙️| Jamie Carragher’s response when asked about Florian Wirtz unfollowing him on Instagram: 🗣️“Look, first of all, I’ve got no problem with Florian unfollowing me. He’s a young lad in a new country, big pressure, I get it. I’ve been in football a long time and I know how these things feel. But I stand by every word I said. We’ve been really patient with him, probably more patient than we should have been. £116m signing, huge expectations…we’ve given him time, we’ve been kind. He was poor against United. Too many games where he’s been quiet when Liverpool needed him to step up. But let’s be honest about the bigger picture, because this isn’t just about one Instagram unfollow or one poor performance against Manchester United. We’ve reached the point in the season where we have to look at the full body of work. Florian has played the majority of minutes in the Premier League, around 2,300-plus and he’s contributed 5 goals and 3 assists. That’s not a disaster, but for a player of his reputation and that fee, it’s modest at best. We were patient from day one. We said give him time to adapt to the pace, the physicality, the travel, the intensity of Arne Slot’s system. And we were right to do that, we’ve been very, very kind. Now, analytically, let’s break down the player and how he fits the team. Florian is a wonderful technician. His ability to receive the ball between the lines, his vision, his close control and those clever little passes, that’s all top level. He can be ‘neat and tidy’ in possession, and early in the season I used that phrase because I was genuinely trying to be positive while he settled in. But neat and tidy isn’t enough at Liverpool week in, week out. When you watch the games closely, you see the traits that are holding him back in this league. He’s not the quickest, and against teams that sit deep or press aggressively like United did, he can become peripheral, you lose him for long periods. Defensively, his involvement in his own half is below what Slot demands from this Liverpool side. The team presses high and works as a unit; that’s their identity. Florian’s work-rate off the ball is average at best, and in big matches you’ve seen him struggle to impose himself when the tempo goes up or when opponents get physical. Even in the games where Liverpool have played well and won, it’s still been Dominik Szoboszlai driving things forward with his energy and dynamism, Florian has flashes, he had a good spell around January where he looked sharp but overall the consistency hasn’t been there. Too many games where he’s quiet when the team needs a spark. Too many times he’s been on the periphery rather than the focal point. That’s not me burying him; that’s just what the numbers and the eye test show after nearly a full season. Unfollowing me doesn’t change any of that. Criticism comes with the territory when you’re a marquee signing at a club like Liverpool. The best players I’ve ever played with or watched, Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, even the modern greats, they thrive on it. They use it as fuel and answer it on the pitch. I’m not saying Florian can’t still become that superstar everyone hoped for when he signed. He has the talent, no doubt. But talent has to translate into consistent impact, especially at this level and with these expectations. So yeah, unfollow if you want. But the real conversation needs to happen out on the grass. That’s where it matters.”

@GBUnitedx NFOR missed an opportunity not forcing Villa to use Lindelöf more in build up, he was allowed to perform in his intended role to easily.

It’s not a must for you to agree with me, but if you watched Aston Villa vs Nottingham Forest, you would agree that Victor Lindelöf was everywhere on the pitch. The guy played very well in midfield in his first game playing there. He is known as a defender and sometimes as a right-back, but Unai Emery decided to use him in midfield after Onana got injured. Honestly, he performed brilliantly. He was defending, recovering the ball, joining attacks, breaking play, and making tackles. Meanwhile, Elliot Anderson — the player Manchester United want to sign — was struggling badly. What made it even more special was that when Lindelöf got substituted, the Aston Villa fans gave him a standing ovation. Anderson was almost nowhere, and in the end the team lost 4-0. This is why, when thinking about players to sign, we must think carefully. Victor proved that what we really need is another strong midfielder — not just any player because of hype. Do you agree with me? 👀🔥

Reporter to Arne Slot: 🗣️ "Not blocking crosses, not tracking runners and things like that, they are the basics of football. The very basics of football, whether you're playing at this level or in the park. As a coach, when you ask yourself tonight, why your players aren't doing the basics, what's your answer?"

There is a general trend where coaches see overloading, pinning, and 'exploiting space behind' the opponent's defensive line as the starting point for attacking strategy. This can lead to perceptual blinkering, with players doing these things instead of becoming passing options.
Jamie Hamilton@stirling_j

Feels like this barely even registers any more. It’s hardly questioned when, regardless of characteristics, FBs are routinely positioned high in the last line. It’s an obsession with ‘manipulating the opponent’s defensive line’ that becomes an end in itself. Pure mechanism.

@Mike87_United Mate its time to accept it was a big failure. A back 3 has won the premier league once. Im not sure a team has ever won the champions league with a back 3. The tactics Amorim used consistently for a decent amount of time were sub par. Move on.

Amorim was trying to coach us to play a different style for the long term. Carrick is not doing anything for the long term, he’s doing what he knows these players are comfortable with for the best possible short term results. It takes barely above room temperature IQ to grasp.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has appealed to Liverpool to change the terms of Harvey Elliott’s loan after admitting the current situation is “damaging” the 22-year-old. Last month, Emery acknowledged there was a reluctance for Elliott to play more games, with the Liverpool loanee needing to play 10 matches in order for Villa to trigger the obligation to buy him. Emery acknowledged that the current situation on Friday — with Elliott only able to play three more games before Villa’s obligation is triggered — “is not fair” on the midfielder. After watching the game back, it's apparent how much of Arsenal's possession play comes through their centre-backs. Arsenal's build-up structure is brilliant; they rarely get it wrong (technical error for 1st yesterday), and Gabriel and Saliba find themselves as the spare player to step onto line two. Saliba increases the tempo and fixes United players. You can see Shaw and Dorgu's eyes on Saliba and the ball, which gives opportunities for Arsenal's right-hand side to make runs off their markers. But that tempo isn't realised enough, especially on the left. We are taking a deeper dive into this with a live stream, details to join will follow later today.

🎙Cristian Chivu on the Arsenal game.... 🗣 “We did introduce Andy Diouf at the end, I had also thought about changing to 4-3-3, but I was lacking an attacking force, and Arsenal introduced Gabriel in defence when they realised that Pio Esposito was causing them problems. “We had three strikers at the end, it’s true that we lacked a bit of attacking flair and crosses down the right, but Luis Henrique had a good game, all the lads put in a great effort tonight from start to finish,” assured the coach. “When these Arsenal players come and surround you, they attack from all angles, they encircle you. I was so impressed with their technique with the ball moving at pace, they make the right choices and first touches, they have the speed of thought to find their teammates quickly and on the right Saka can take men on to cause all sorts of problems. “We won a few challenges and went on the counter quite easily in those moments, but Arsenal have so much quality in their squad. I won’t point out how much money they spent, as that would be too banal, but the Premier League does have a very different type of intensity and pace to Italian football. “Some of us, including myself, are trying to introduce something more in that sense, the type of moves we want to see, but it’s not an easy process. We’ve got to maintain the belief that we are on the right track.”

🇩🇪👀 Jürgen Klopp: "I’m the one who defends the coaches the most. I’m not the type to arrive in the morning – like some others in European football lately – and say, ‘We lost, sack him!’ So I understand the coaches and I really fight for them, but I also expect a real impact from them." (@lequipe)

I think Bruno Fernandes is the best midfielder in Manchester United history. I’d have him above everyone. The only reason I can’t truly argue it is because of titles. He’s elite. He’s the greatest I’ve ever seen. #MUFC

I think a Casemiro, Mainoo pivot can work if you invert Dalot next to Casemiro and push Mainoo up in possession. Not seen Dalot into midfield since ten Hag but thought it was his best role whilst at United. Decent engine, decent technically, decent defender, kept it ticking.

If I'm Arteta, I'd be modelling Gyokeres' game behind Cavani. Similar profiles in terms of their strengths & weaknesses Not once in this comp is Cavani trying to tussle with a CB for superiority. Just notice his clever movement. Its really an artform 🪄

The wildest thing about #MUFC is that if you study football, you know there’s a HUGE chance that the 3-4-3 with proper profiles is the future of football We were the first big club in the world to truly adopt the ideology full-time. Over the next 2-3 years you will see the 3-4-3 become a true staple of world football. We were so close to being at the forefront of modern football, tactically. And literally right at the critical moment of being on the right track, Wilcox rips it up to start again because he realized Amorim would get all the credit despite him. That is Manchester United culture— egotistical owners, bottling tough decisions, lying to managers, and caving to fans and legends who back players over the club. This is United culture. Jason Wilcox is simply acting within the standards many of you have set. Merry-go-round continues🩸
