@65535dot This is cool, but personally I would prefer something between A and B.

It was actually annoying. I used it for a year for Italian and they were throwing gender politics into it and when learning a gendered language it made it much more difficult than it should have been when the cartoons and names don't match with your expectations and shouldn't even be introduced when you're just learning!

duolingo is fascinating it's fun, gamified, addictive, and very engaging and active online but it's absolutely useless and you'll never learn a new language by just using it

Duolingo is SO dramatic omg

@luseemeow Reddit mods are generally the biggest losers with the most jealousy to ever exist in a group with power. Things that are good and helpful which they are not responsible for just remind them of their inadequacies. Then add far left insanity to the mix. Just stop using reddit tbh.

The ideal is to match the refresh rate of your monitor. Many of us run 144hz monitors. When you dip down too much below that the quality of the experience degrades substantially. 120 FPS is acceptable, 60 is clunky and 30 is unplayable or unenjoyable, same difference. I expect a game to be optimized properly so that at 2K resolution anything I throw at my machine runs smoothly at over 120 FPS which by-in-large it does so without issue.

@shoe0nhead It's really more akin to recognizing someone's voice. We are all recognizing ChatGPT's "voice" when people share things obviously written by it. The prevalence on X of LLM use in this fashion is wild but unsurprising.

@9mmsmg Texas is not like this. People are friendly, happy, and thriving. The Internet is not real life and negativity flourishes here like a bad infection.

There are a multitude of metrics you can judge the rate at a which a society is declining. Crime, literacy rate, unemployment, etc are all key elements, but they require a little research. Something that's easily observable by anyone is simple, politeness. It's gone. Everywhere I go, everyone is grumpy and rude to each other. You rarely ever hear courtesy words anymore. Please, thank you, excuse me. They've all fallen by the wayside. This is simply downstream of the rest of the decline. A symptom, but still a great way to judge. Like PSA numbers when checking for prostate cancer. It's rampant and only seems to be getting worse.

@ShaneSchaetzel Would you suggest this for someone interested in Catholicism from protestantism? I have a buddy who is leaning towards us. Also, anything on the Church fathers that a protestant might find compelling? I know the second isn't related but I have heard it is powerful.

The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible is the best, and most comprehensive, Catholic Bible on the market today, but it’s big — very big. If you want to carry it with you, you’ll have to put it in your pocket. This app lets you do that.👇🏻

What’s a good sci-fi novel that isn’t a series, isn’t Star Wars / Star Trek (etc), and that is intellectually stimulating? (I’ve read Weir’s stuff so not that)

Hypothetically…….. We are being taxed on money we never made. Let that sink in. If I bought my property outright for $160,000 in 2009 Now the county says it’s worth $446,000. Did I sell it? No. Did I make a profit? No. Did I get a check for $446,000? No. But my taxes jumped like I did. That’s the problem. This isn’t income. This isn’t cash. This is a number someone decided on paper and now I’m being billed for it. If my stock portfolio doubles, I don’t pay taxes until I sell. If my income doesn’t increase, I don’t magically owe more income tax. So why does owning a home work differently? Why am I being taxed on unrealized gains? A house isn’t just an investment, it’s where people live. And this system means you can do everything right, pay off your home, and still get squeezed harder every year because of a number you never turned into money. You don’t truly own something if you can be taxed out of it. This isn’t about “services” or “inflation.” It’s about being charged for value you never received. It’s time people start to notice.

Urinals aren’t some sort of special treat the boys get. They’re used because of scale. It’s a business decision. Urinals are smaller, use less material, & less space. They’re cheaper to implement. You almost never have to unclog them. It’s not that difficult to figure out.

Do you know how hard it is to find a HVAC contractor that will install a modern heat pump? “Heat pumps are overrated.” “They don’t work in freezing temps.” “They’re more prone to failure.” Um, no? The latest inverter cold-climate systems use fundamentally different technology with variable-frequency compressors and enhanced vapor injection that maintain full capacity at -5°F and rated operation to -22°F. These are among the most efficient air-source systems available. And keep in mind, I’m willing to pair a heat pump with an efficient gas furnace for a dual-fuel setup if it makes sense. But I have yet to find someone who will even entertain the idea of installing one, especially a MrCool or Gree Flexx, which typically means the contractor can’t hide behind an un-itemized quote. I knew the HVAC industry was riddled with middlemen who make money through commissions and hidden markups, but I wasn’t expecting such fear mongering. It’s eerily similar to the vibe from 8 years ago when I decided to ditch my gas car for an electric vehicle. Back then everyone said I was crazy, but they just didn’t realize how much the technology had improved. Now, electric vehicles are everywhere. I have a feeling it will be the same for modern heat pumps in homes. Am I wrong?

@LOVEROFTRUTHIRL @slye I wonder if I'd run into a similar problem as the OP - no one does them here so finding someone to install might be the big issue. Cool to know about none the less, thanks for the info.

Boilers tops out at 95%+ efficiency whereas force air furnaces top out around 89%. Water has a much higher specific energy than air so it holds heat better and keeps it where humans live (within 5-6ft of the ground) whereas hot air rises so much of the heat in a forced air system is wasted/concentrated at the ceiling level. Blowing hot dry air around also dries out your skin. Built-in humidifier can help, but risk condensation in attic/walls if the house is not perfectly sealed.

Interesting, I'd have to see the numbers on what it takes to keep a boiler at temp, my dual stage furnace system was quite efficient and used very little gas this winter. To be fair it probably only switched to gas for very short periods as we get maybe 14-21 days of freezing and only a week of that might occur within daylight hours. Even then with my sealed envelope the HVAC system hardly runs in comparison to a conventionally insulated home.

@jj_pickens @slye Boiler plus radiator beats both for heating in both comfort efficiency. I would pair a heat pump with a boiler system before a force air furnace.
