To understand the current state of affairs in Iran, we must look at its modern history.
This is a brief summary with additional details attached in the thread below.
1794-1925 Qajar Dynasty
Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar unified Persia in 1794 after 15 years of civil war. The Qajars ruled for 136 years under seven shahs, and during that time they lost the Caucasus to Russia via the 1813/1828 treaties, became entangled in the Anglo-Russian "Great Game," and signed the pivotal 1901 D'Arcy oil deal to Britain. The 1905–1906 Constitutional Revolution introduced a parliament and limited monarchy.
Decline and Fall
By the early 20th century, the dynasty was widely viewed as corrupt and incompetent. World War I occupations weakened it further. In 1921, Reza Khan, a military officer from the Persian Cossack Brigade, staged a coup with British support, becoming war minister and later prime minister. He restored order, centralized power, and sidelined Ahmad Shah, the last Qajar ruler, who was abroad in Europe. On December 12, 1925, the Majlis (parliament) formally deposed the Qajars and declared Reza Khan as the new Shah, founding the Pahlavi dynasty.
1925-1979 Pahlavi Dynasty
Reza Khan centralized power, secularized society, built infrastructure, and formally requested the world call Persia "Iran” in 1935. During WWII, Allied British and Soviet forces occupied Iran. Reza Shah was forced to abdicate in 1941 and his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, became Shah. He accelerated Western-aligned reforms via the 1960s–1970s "White Revolution" including land reform, women's rights and industrialization, but faced backlash over inequality and repression by his secret police force, SAVAK. After Prime Minister Mossadegh nationalized oil, the U.S. and U.K. staged a coup in 1953 and removed Mossadegh. Mass protests toppled the monarchy in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
1979-present
Ayatollah Khomeini established a hybrid theocracy blending elected institutions with clerical supremacy under velayat-e faqih. The 1980–1988 Iran-Iraq War consolidated the regime amid massive costs. Under Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei (1989–2026), Iran navigated sanctions over its nuclear program, supported regional proxies, and endured protests.

@EricLDaugh @tab24759 The guy who shot at our Vice President is now getting treated in the hospital.
Also a judge has apologized to the guy who tried to shoot President Trump.

🚨 NOW: Secret Service official CONFIRMS that agents identified an ARMED individual near the White House RIGHT AFTER JD Vance's motorcade rolled through the area
After they made contact, he fled and open FIRED on officers
The White House was locked down
Pray for Trump and Vance 🙏🏻
"They returned fire and engaged. That individual was hit, he was transported to the hospital."
"At least one, only one bystander was hit by the suspect. That individual, the juvenile, did not sustain any life-threatening injuries, but he's also receiving treatment at the hospital."
"I'll point out that not long before this shooting occurred, the Vice President's motorcade did transit through this area."

@HansMahncke How could Jon Karl expect to get away with such a lie on air? Insane! x.com/jkash000/statu…

Here’s Jon Karl, telling George Stephanopoulos what we now know is a total lie.

@JohnPflughoft Did you see this? x.com/jkash000/statu…

Judge Zia M. Faruqui is a United States Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He was appointed on September 14, 2020, becoming the first Pakistani-American to serve in that role in D.C. federal court.
English

@JKash000 Nothing online says where he was born. Just that he is a "Pakastani American".
His appointment was by a panel of other leftist judges. This process should be done away with completely.
He's not a serious person. And he's constantly overruled.

@tmitch4040 How could he not know he would get called out on the lie though? I guess that’s what I can’t understand.
English

@JKash000 Why ? Just to make himself sound important.?

@joekent16jan19 @SirStevenKJ President Trump doesn’t need advice from you.

The sooner we recognize this hard truth—that there’s no military solution to the conflict with Iran—the better off the United States will be.
Sheer military force cannot reopen the Strait of Hormuz without escalating the war and sucking us into another endless, bloody quagmire that delivers zero benefit to our people.
We can’t get rid of the emboldened government in Tehran, regardless of how many leaders we kill. If we try we will end up with a government or failed state, worse than what we have now.
The inevitable reality is this: we will have to cut a deal with Iran. We can be pragmatic and do it now on our own terms, or we can keep listening to the same neocons and the Israeli government who got us into this mess, only to cut the same deal after we’ve lost even more.
Recognizing that we have hit the point of diminishing returns and pulling out now is not weakness. It is strength—and it’s the right thing to do for the American people.

@GuntherEagleman @brumarsh I think Allen was supposed to bring a bomb that night!

🚨JUDGE APOLOGIZES TO TRUMP ASSASSINATION SUSPECT FOR “POOR TREATMENT” IN JAIL!
The judge literally said sorry to the guy accused of trying to assassinate President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner — the same dirtbag who told the FBI he didn’t expect to survive the attack.
He’s on suicide watch, in a padded room, 24-hour lockdown… and the judge is worried about his “constitutional rights,” demanding he gets a Bible and lawyer meetings ASAP.
The suspect allegedly came armed to spray bullets at the President and the entire audience… and we’re apologizing to him?
Absolutely insane.
TIME TO REMOVE THESE ACTIVIST JUDGES!
English

🚨 TRUMP TORCHES JONATHAN KARL & ABC FAKE NEWS:
“Jonathan Karl, of ABC Fake News, made a statement that I called him early in the morning, the day after the assassination attempt, to ask whether or not HE was OK.
No, this was a hit on ME, not HIM, and I didn’t make such a call… He just confirmed that to me when he called again.
I would say that’s very dishonest reporting. He’s trying to make himself look important but I’m not surprised, because it comes from ABC Fake News!”

English

@CollinRugg @Bryan_Hammond_1 I’m still wondering if Allen was supposed to bring a bomb that night, but somehow ended up not.
English

JUST IN: Judge Zia Faruqui has *apologized* to Cole Allen, the man who is accused of trying to kill President Trump, for how he has been treated in jail.
Fox News' Larry Kudlow was heard ripping the judge on Fox.
"The judge apologized to this guy? ... [He would've] shot at the President and we're apologizing to this guy?"
These judges are absolutely insane and belong in prison.
