My favourite non-fiction book last year was John Hatt's anthology of Norman Lewis' travel writing, A Quiet Sky. My favourite novel was The Remembered Soldier, a remarkable story of a WW1 survivor in Holland, by Anjet Daanje, superbly translated by David McKay

Life was easier when you knew your inescapable place in the universe, We have gone from understanding the firmament above us as a lid (Homer) to seeing it as a vastness of space (Anixamander).
