WHAT is Roy from Space? For the benefit of readers who, like your intrepid social media dude, had never heard of ROY DEL ESPACIO before Deaf Crocodile animation superfans started yelling "take my money!" at him, here's a brief breakdown of our latest Kickstarter: In 1983, the third animated feature film ever made in Mexico was released into theaters. It closed a week later. With atrocious reviews and universal disdain from audiences, this historically-significant but odd film drifted into obscurity. For decades, animation historians, those who knew about it at all, classified it as a "lost film." This all changed in 2023 when Deaf Crocodile, in conjunction with researcher Alejandro Vidal Charris got together and traded notes. Dennis was working on licensing, Craig would handle restoration, while Charris was able to assist with contacts of the film's rights-holders. (We'll talk more about the HOW of all this in later posts this week.) ROY FROM SPACE is a huge discovery. It was helmed by Héctor López Carmona, a professional animator (though someone who had never helmed an entire animated feature), and drawn largely by self-taught and outsider artists. It's strange, it's ramshackle, but it sure isn't boring! The sci-fi tale grabs generously from storylines of old 'Flash Gordon' serials, as well as, more troublingly, several minutes of footage from the live-action Japanese sci-fi film, MESSAGE FROM SPACE. Because the film would be ***unreleaseable*** with these pilfered fragments intact, Deaf Crocodile has hired animators Brian Smee and Isabelle Aspin to animate the MESSAGE FROM SPACE footage while matching the style of ROY FROM SPACE. Because animating several minutes of footage by a team of two takes time and money, a Kickstarter is needed to finish ROY. The result will be a truly eye-opening experience, and one that hasn't been seen since ROY'S original audiences stumbled, befuddled, out of Mexico City cinemas that one week in 1983.
