Kenya is no longer a safe haven for those fleeing repression at home.

Human rights advocate and journalist Yaekob Yatane, found dead in Nairobi, had reportedly received repeated threats (Meseret Media) – Yaekob Yatane, a journalist who had been living in Kenya for a long time and was known for writing for media outlets such as Zara Media and Addis Standard, was found dead in his residence six days ago. After going into exile in Kenya, Yaekob became known for exposing governance problems and human rights violations in his native Konso area. Until his death, he had continued doing this through various media platforms and social media. A person who knew the deceased told Meseret Media that Yaekob had been receiving threats a few months before his death. “He told me he was being followed, especially by individuals linked to the government. He expressed concern that he was under surveillance. At one point, he even sent me a screenshot,” the source said, sharing the image with our media (shown below). Meseret Media has confirmed that the international journalist rights organization has begun looking into the case and is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. According to earlier reports by WT Media, medical evidence suggests that the cause of Yaekob Yatane’s death may be poisoning and physical assault. The outlet also reported that although Yaekob had informed Kenyan police and the about the threats he received months earlier, he did not receive adequate protection. “According to the preliminary autopsy conducted at Nairobi City Mortuary, the journalist’s death was caused by a condition known medically as DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation),” WT Media reported. Medical experts say this condition is often associated with severe infection or toxins (poisoning) spreading in the body. The report further indicated that the examination found bleeding under the scalp (parietal scalp contusion), and bleeding in both lungs (bilateral lung hemorrhage). Yaekob Yatane, originally from the Konso community, was an academic who had worked for many years as an editor and reporter for English-language programming at Ethiopian Television. He also served as a university lecturer, researcher, and held senior roles in various non-governmental organizations (NGOs). | Meseret Media |
