The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Nursing extend our gratitude to the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, for his leadership in health and health care during his tenure. We acknowledge his government’s efforts to prioritize health, including the reinstatement of the chief nursing officer of Canada in 2022, advancements in Indigenous health, and a commitment to economic security and safety during the pandemic. Initiatives such as poverty reduction, mental health care, universal daycare, pharmacare, and dental care programs have been pivotal steps toward health equity for all Canadians. As we reflect on these contributions, we recognize that significant gaps remain. With 6.5 million Canadians still lacking access to a primary care provider, voters continue to rank health care as a top priority. Canadian nurses urge all leaders to advance efforts to improve access to care, remove legislative and funding barriers, and optimize the contributions of all regulated nurses across the health system continuum. Bold leadership is essential to achieving health for all. In June 2023, the CNA board met with Prime Minister Trudeau during the International Council of Nurses Congress in Montreal — a moment that reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening health systems and supporting the nursing profession. Canadian nurses remain steadfast in advocating for a healthier future for all Canadians. We look forward to working with the next chapter of leadership to ensure health remains at the forefront of the national agenda. cna-aiic.ca/en/blogs/cn-co…

We need more family doctors, especially in rural communities. So, we’re forgiving portions of student loans for doctors and nurses who staff rural clinics.
