Pope Leo XIV held his first meeting with Dame Sarah Mullally, the new Archbishop of Canterbury and the first woman to lead the Church of England and the Anglican Communion. During their audience at the Vatican, the Pope encouraged Catholics and Anglicans to continue the path of dialogue and unity, acknowledging that new challenges have made full communion more difficult. He warned that it would be a “scandal” not only to fail in the common mission of making Christ known, but also to stop working to overcome divisions, “no matter how intractable they may appear.”

Pope Leo XIV ordained 10 new priests in St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, urging them to keep the doors of the Church open and to remember that their mission is to welcome, not to exclude. “Today more than ever, especially when statistics seem to indicate a divide between people and the Church, keep the door open! Let people in, and be prepared to go out,” the pope said in his homily for the Mass on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Eight of the new priests were ordained for the Diocese of Rome, of which the pope is bishop: Guglielmo Lapenna, Giorgio Larosa, Jos Emanuele Nleme Sabate, Giovanni Emanuele Nunziante Salazar, Antonino Ordine, Yordan Camilo Ramos Medina, Daniele Riscica, and Cristian Sguazzino. The pope also ordained Armando Roa Núñez, born in Mexico and incardinated in the Diocese of Miao in India, and Selwyn Pinto Loyce, born in Saudi Arabia and incardinated in the Institute of Christ the Redeemer, Idente Missionaries.

"the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that “the death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person”, and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide." - CCC 2267 Pope Leo XIV sent a video message to participants gathered at DePaul University in Chicago for the 15th anniversary of Illinois' abolition of the death penalty. The Holy Father's address drew on the Church's consistent teaching that the dignity of every human person must be protected at every stage of life, including at its end.

Pope Leo XIV concludes his four‑nation African tour in Equatorial Guinea, the smallest of the host countries, where nearly three‑quarters of the population are baptized Catholics. His visit included a courtesy visit with the president, an address to authorities and civil society, a meeting with the world of culture, and a visit to the “Jean Pierre Olie” psychiatric hospital, followed by a private meeting with the bishops. On April 22, he celebrated Holy Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mongomo, visited the “Pope Francis Technology School,” and then proceeded to Bata, where he visited Bata Prison, prayed at the memorial for victims of the 7 March 2021 explosion, and met young people and families at Bata Stadium. The journey ended on April 23 with a final Mass at Malabo Stadium, attended by some 30,000 faithful, marking the grand finale of his African pilgrimage.

After 4 countries, 11 cities, and 10 days filled with faith, hope, and powerful encounters, Pope Leo XIV now heads back to Rome. Thank you, Africa, for opening the doors of your people’s hearts and revealing the beauty of the Catholic Church in your land. Safe travels, Holy Father.

Pope Leo’s run‑in with a rogue fly during his trip to Equatorial Guinea was an unexpected comedy break — a light reminder that the man who leads the Catholic Church is still just human and wonderfully, hilariously relatable.

At the end of the Mass he celebrated in Mongomo, Equatorial Guinea, Pope Leo took a moment to pray before a beautiful image of the Immaculate Conception. Meanwhile, the enthusiastic choir sang such a joyful hymn that it moved hearts even from afar.

This was one of the most joyful and electric welcomes Pope Leo has received in Africa. The city of Mongomo greeted him with a smoke-filled entrance worthy of a major sports final. The energy took him by surprise, and he felt it so strongly that he broke from the schedule to give an improvised speech to the crowd.
