It was a tough night for Jack. Poor boy, he just cannot get comfortable after the sun goes down. He sleeps with determination and gusto while the sun is shining, however. I lose on both ends. Since Jack is old enough to be my dad, though, I dote on my super hero in his honor.

More than just about anything else, kids want to belong... to someONE or someTHING. I’m not supposing that educators can always provide the answer... but an awareness of the fundamental humanity of their students is always a good start.

Wherever I go, I try to cultivate a sense of the oneness of humanity. I see everyone I meet as being essentially the same. And people respond positively to this. Animals too. Fear leads to isolation, so it's helpful to be open to others.

Talking to someone with an open mind is seriously one of my favorite things because there's never an end to what you can talk about and learn.

Sometimes I work right next Jack’s bed so that my old, blind dog can sense my presence while he sleeps. He often wakes up a little while I am typing so that I can reassure him he’s a good dog several times. Then he blinks slowly, exhales a snort, and returns to his slumbers.
