point 3 is the one that should terrify every founder and VC reading this, the Gulf states were quietly becoming the biggest non-US source of tech capital on earth, Abu Dhabi & Saudi sovereign wealth were pouring billions into AI chips and infrastructure, this war just gave them every reason to pivot that capital toward China which was already rolling out the red carpet, so the west just simultaneously destroyed its energy supply chain AND its emerging capital pipeline in a single strategic move, I wrote about this exact dynamic tonight in a thread on the talent and capital migration east, the funding crash and the brain drain are the same phenomenon seen from 2 different angles point 5 is where it gets really interesting though, China controls roughly 80% of global solar panel manufacturing, dominates battery supply chains through CATL and BYD, is building nuclear plants at 10 per year & now has C2C and power to X at scale, so the country that the west tried to contain through chip sanctions is about to become the only entity capable of solving the energy crisis that this war just created, the strategic irony is almost poetic bc the west just made itself more dependent on China in the exact moment it was trying to decouple
Balaji@balajis

I'm going to make some obvious points. (1) Blowing up all the oil infrastructure in the Middle East is an insane idea, and may well result in a global economic crash and humanitarian crisis unrivaled in the lives of those now living. We're talking about the price of everything everywhere rising, from food to gas, at a moment when inflation was already high. All of that will be laid at the feet of the authors of this war. (2) The antebellum status quo of Feb 27, 2026 was just not that bad, but we're unlikely to return to it. Expect indefinite, long-term, ongoing disruptions to everything out of the Middle East. (3) Also assume tech financing crashes for the indefinite future. The genius plan to get the Gulf states caught in the crossfire has incinerated much of the funding for LPs, for datacenters, and for IPOs. Anyone in tech who supported this war may soon learn the meaning of "force majeure" as funding gets yanked. (4) Many capital allocators will instead be allocating much further down Maslow's hierarchy of needs, towards useful basic things like food and energy. (5) It's fortunate that all those progressives yelled about the "climate crisis." Yes, their reasoning about timelines was wrong, and much of the money was wasted in graft, but the result was right: we all need energy independence from the Middle East, pronto. It's also fortunate that Elon and China autistically took climate seriously. Now they're going to need to ship a billion solar panels, electric vehicles, batteries, nuclear power plants, and the like to get everyone off oil, immediately. (6) It's not just an oil and gas problem, of course. It's also a fertilizer problem, and a chemical precursor problem. Maybe some new sources will come online at the new prices, but it takes time to dial stuff up, particularly at this scale, so shortages are almost a certainty. That said, China has actually scaled up coal-to-chemicals[a,c] (C2C), and there's also something more sci-fi called Power-to-X[b] which turns arbitrary power + water + air into hydrocarbons. But all of that will need to get accelerated. I have a background in chemical engineering so may start funding things in this area. (7) Ultimately, this war is going to result in tremendous blame for anyone associated with it. It's a no-win scenario to blow up this much infrastructure for so many people. Simply not worth it for whatever objective they thought they were going to attain. But unless you're actually in a position to stop the madness, the pragmatic thing to do is: scramble to mitigate the fallout to yourself, your business, and your people. I am convinced that 2025 was a turning point. A pivot. And that while things might continue to be chaotic and surprising in 2026, future historians will trace their origins back somehow to 2025. And why do I say that? 🇨🇳 This was the year that China showed its strength. Before 2025, the narrative that the Chinese economic miracle is running out of steam (“it will never surpassed the United States in GDP”). In fact, many in China became blackpilled and concluded China was in the “garbage time of history.” Somehow in one year everything changed. China was the only country in the world to go toe to toe with the US in Trump’s tariff war and stated it down. In the process, it revealed its killer rare-earth chokehold on not just the US but the world. The TikTok shutdown fear prompted the Redbook Refugee phenomenon, and all of a sudden China became the hottest destination for American influencers. China switched from “hide-and-bide” mode to show-my-muscles mode. This is actually strategic from the POV of a rising power: if you can no longer go under the radar you must now make yourself look as big as possible to deter confrontation. Dancing robots. DeepSeek moment. Made-in-China 2025. 9/3 Military Parade. 🇺🇸 America went Mask-off in 2025. Despite increasing difficulties Biden doubled down on rules-based international order like-minded democracy stuff. Trump burned it down. Liberation day, Munich security conference, Doge Madness, AI Executive orders, chumming up to Xi and Putin, humiliating Zelensky, NSS attacking Europe, murder and piracy in Venezuela, menacing Greenland. It’s the consummate heel turn worthy of the WWF. And for those who still think that Trump is an aberration, there’s no hope for you. 🇺🇦 🇷🇺 when I heard that Putin said on Russian TV that he is in love again I thought… “that mofo thinks the war is over already!” Of course, it can be a psychological play and Putin loves his little games, but even as people die in trenches up and down the line of contact, a new consensus has set in: Ukraine is in the final stage of a war of attrition and collapse can set in at any time. This sent the Europeans insane and Americans scrambling to make a peace deal. The fallout from this is far from over but the beginning of the end became painfully clear in 2025 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 won’t say much about this except this concept ripped the mask off the west for me. That the are people condemning China for Uyghur “genocide” while condoning Gaza appalls me. Wait…it was hypocrisy and double-dealing all along wasn’t it?
