Did you know when you redirect a file with > or use tee, it creates a 0 byte file right away before your command or pipeline runs? If you're not careful this can result in data loss if you're overwriting a file, such as database backups. nickjanetakis.com/blog/watch-out…

A serious website was long overdue. We redesigned vinteum.org to better tell the story of what we’ve been building: funding, training, and supporting open-source Bitcoin developers and researchers in Brazil. Check it out: vinteum.org

AI products designed to let startup founders build their products suffer from exactly the same root problem that no-code platforms do. They both have this idea of there being "no programmer", as if the programmer's job was to write code. Their job is and always has been to ensure a particular desired outcome is met. I spent almost two years building and pitching a no-code platform with the idea that non technical people could build apps. I've seen where this leads. The fact is that there is *always* a programmer. The question is just what language do they use. In a no-code platform, it is drag and drop GUIs. With a software factory or agentic coding setup, its prompts. They still have the job of verifying that their intent was met, and that their intent aligned with what was needed. But the CEO doesn't *want* to be a programmer! They don't *have time* to deal with whatever questions come up in the process of implementing a desired outcome. As soon as your idea gains any kind of traction or PMF the CEO's job becomes entirely different. Wielding capital, leveraging growth to expand the business, making deals, hiring the right team, supporting them and setting the right targets. This isn't like a deathblow to the concept of no-code or software factories, its just something that you have to realize: As your customers gain success on your platform, your platform will become less and less desirable to them. They will hire better talent, in-house tools, buy more specialized tools.

Do any AI code review tools measure what humans catch that they miss? Not just accepted/rejected/dismissed comment rates, but actual recall vs. human reviewers. If a human finds an issue the AI didn't, is that tracked, quantified, and fed back into future reviews? I see a lot of comparisons between AI code reviews but we also to have measure them against the team's own baseline if we want to automate more parts of our processes. Some of those metrics also need to be quantified per directory/file.

Unless @Apple's decision to terminate @craigraw's Apple Developer account is reversed by June 30, all new installs of Sparrow will fail, and development on macOS will end. If you value Sparrow, a repost would help. @AppleSupport
Craig Raw 🐦@craigraw

My attempt to protect users from scam apps on the @AppStore has gotten my Apple Developer account flagged for termination - ironically, for "dishonest activity". Unless it's reversed by June 30, all new installs of Sparrow Wallet will fail, and development on macOS will end. The context: since 2023, more than a dozen fake "Sparrow" apps have appeared on the App Store, as recently as April this year. Users have contacted me after losing their savings, in some cases their life savings, to these impersonators. I'm the developer of the real Sparrow Wallet, a desktop app, and I hold the registered US trademarks for the name and logo. I have publicly warned @Apple and the community about these fake apps from early 2024, but they keep appearing. The app @Apple flagged was a placeholder that was never published. Its only purpose was to warn users that Sparrow is desktop-only and that other "Sparrow" apps aren't mine. This approach may have been misguided, but there was nothing dishonest about it. I'm confident this is an automated misclassification that Apple would reverse on review - but I may be terminated before a human ever looks at my appeal. The cost would fall on @Apple's own users: blocked installs and no updates for a tool people rely on, which opens the door for more fakes. If you value Sparrow, a repost would help. @AppleSupport

Sometimes I try to be gentle when it comes to disagreements about technology choices, but I think it is time to start speaking more plainly. #Elixir, #AshFramework and @elixirphoenix are by a wide margin the best choices to build your business and core technology on top of. If you are building with other things, you're just making a bad decision, plain and simple. No, that does not mean you are creating a barrier you cannot surmount. We power through bad decisions every day. Yes, there are specific things I wouldn't choose Elixir for. Mobile apps, hard real time number crunching etc. We have some answers for those that I might use if the use case is bounded and I can see that they fit well (NX etc.), but my unqualified "Elixir is better" is less strong in certain domains. If you are writing a web server, APIs, ETL, etc. there is just flat out no other better option. Fight me bro. I often say things like "well, I'm biased but ..." when qualifying that one should use Elixir, as I'm the author of #AshFramework, but that framing is getting old. I'm not biased. It's just better technology. I'm happy to debate it, and I don't think that anyone who disagrees with me is stupid, but I do think that they are wrong. I don't believe in the "different strokes for different folks" thing anymore.

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

I love running "hail mary" prompts like this. A few weeks ago I prompted Opus to find code loading optimizations in the Erlang/OTP code base. It came up with 6-7 options, 3 of which I could automatically discard, and I asked it to build experiments for the remaining ones. Out of those, 1 was clearly successful, which I then wrapped up and now Erlang/OTP 29 will boot 10% faster for everyone. /autoresearch from @karpathy seems to package this experience into a tighter loop and, if it can find something meaningful, it stands to benefit everyone, especially on OSS. Can't wait to try it and maybe "hail mary" a few other optimizations.
tobi lutke@tobi

OK, well. I ran /autoresearch on the the liquid codebase. 53% faster combined parse+render time, 61% fewer object allocations. This is probably somewhat overfit, but there are absolutely amazing ideas in this.
