@CraigBaird The year before it was demolished, the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival used it as (several) Fringe venues. Unfortunately, despite being on separate floors, the old department store layout was open concept, and not soundproof. Extra unfortunately mine was the loudest. Sorry.

In 2002, the store was demolished to make way for the MTS Centre. The bricks from the original building were used in the arena's facade. The statue of Timothy Eaton that once stood at the store was moved to Polo Park Mall and was declared a Provincial Heritage Object. 🧵 9/12

There was a time when everyone in Winnipeg shopped at "The Big Store". With a staff of 8,000, it covered 21 acres. On a busy day, 10% of Winnipegers shopped there and 50 cents of every shopping dollar was spent there. This is the story of Eaton's Winnipeg store. 🧵 1/12

On this day in 1917, the Mont-Blanc exploded in Halifax Harbour, releasing a 2.9 kiloton explosion. The largest human-made explosion in history to that point, it killed nearly 2,000 people and injured 9,000. Let's learn about this dark day. 🧵1/18

Labour Day has been a statutory holiday in Canada since 1894. It originated in the first workers’ rallies of the Victorian era. Historically, workers marked the day with parades, speeches, games, amateur competitions and picnics. thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/lab…

You really, really should not be relying on AI detectors for classroom use. This new paper shows that not only are they very easy to defeat by just prompting a couple of times, but they have insane false-positive rates against non-native English speakers. arxiv.org/abs/2304.02819

#DDay 🍁79 years ago today, 14,000 Canads and 7,000 Brits landed on Juno Beach. From 7:30-8:00 am, the first Canadians launched attacks along a 8km stretch of beach. Despite the heavily entrenched enemy, by evening, a Canadian bridgehead was established on the coast of Normandy.

This means, by the way, that AI can conduct scientific fraud on command. Just tell GPT to “fix” a dataset by making & justifying changes to make a regression work better. It will give a “better” CSV. Not showing prompts, but it is trivial & another threat to academic integrity.
Ethan Mollick@emollick

A thing that makes AI so revolutionary for data analytics is its ability to "creatively" solve problems when facing a barrier. I ask it to create a dataset with an r-squared of .02. First, it tries brute force, but then comes up many better approaches, solving issues as it goes.

@MindShiftKQED @geoffreyfowler @washingtonpost With no direct source to compare as proof, beware teacher bias being used in a punitive way, harming teacher student relationships. The way forward is iterative learning and strong teacher/student relationships!

#NHLJets Adam Lowry, on every player opting to wear Pride jersey during pre-game warmup tomorrow. “We arrived at that decision as a team. It’s important. We want to make sure our rink, our facility is a welcoming place. Everyone can feel included.” #wfp
