Hungary hasn’t just changed governments- it has cracked open a political system built to survive elections. Orbán’s defeat is the first real breach in the “illiberal state” (his words) he built from 2010 to 2026 in a country shaped by the memory of elections without a level playing field (Horthy era in the interwar period + one-party communist rule from 1949 to 1989). Record turnout (78%) showed that even a heavily tilted system can still be broken. The result is a blow to Trump, who publicly backed Orbán, and to Putin, who loses his closest ally inside the EU. But Orbánism is not necessarily gone with Orbán…Fidesz’s influence across the media, courts and wider state remains deeply embedded. The real test now Hungary has proven it can change governments, is whether it can change the state.
