This is a very significant story by Jack Power in today’s Irish Times. I sincerely hope the Government does not cave in to tech companies and their billionaire bosses on this one. If they do, consumers will be the losers yet again.

Finally… Official Confirmation from Wicklow County Council that the proposed closure of Herbert Road has been completely abandoned. This is great news and clear proof that people power works !!!

Adam Harris, brother of the Tánaiste, has an excellent article in the Irish Times today , where he pinpoints many flaws in the Government’s latest plan to address the growing number of students who have additional education needs. He uses a description of the current system of provision as a “deep rooted charity based model”. I strongly agree with him and the Government as a whole should consider very carefully what he has to say.

Deer Update in today’s Bray People.

The Carlisle Grounds are a venue for football … not music concerts. Local residents have rights too. The Bray People covers the discussion at last week’s Council meeting when I raised this issue. I will be keeping a very close eye on how this develops.

The news that the Wicklow Times is closing is a black day for democracy in this county. Throughout the past 40 years, Shay Fitzmaurice and his magnificent staff have been bringing us the news, good and bad, and in the process asking the questions the people wanted to ask and holding power to account. The model of a free newspaper which was delivered to homes and businesses throughout the county was vital in ensuring that the citizens of County Wicklow were well informed in every aspect of life in their community. It is a sad reflection on the state of this country today, that a newspaper owned and operated by one of our own people is forced out of business because of unsustainable costs and lack of support by Government. I didn’t always agree with the Wicklow Times on every story but I firmly believe that we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Wicklow Times and to Shay personally and his wife, Miriam, and his family for the sacrifices they have made in ensuring that the Wicklow Times held a mirror to County Wicklow with its many advantages and disadvantages over the past 40 years. Thank you Shay.

Easter 2026 and we are STILL seeing "Covid-era" style visitor bans in our hospitals. Restricting family access at Tipperary University Hospital due to norovirus is a failure of care. Without Care Partner legislation, patients are being forcibly isolated from their chosen support systems. Ironically, family members are the most invested in infection control because they have the most to lose. Families whose relatives died in nursing homes during the pandemic have criticised the Covid-19 Evaluation for continuing to ignore their experiences. While the evaluation held its first public session with expert advisers and academics on Wednesday, it has yet to confirm dates for meeting with families. These were expected to begin in February. “There is a jarring contrast between the live roundtable for professionals and the private forums for families,” Majella Beattie said. “One is a public stage — the other is a strategy to keep the victims in the shadows.” “A couple of people in our group have had emails saying this [forum] is being pushed back,” Ms Beattie said on Wednesday. “One woman was told people were sick and another email said it was because of staffing issues. I only know three or four people who got an email, the others got nothing yet.” She added: "We are witnessing a process that prioritises professional distance over the trauma of the bereaved." I share the concerns expressed by many people about the safety of the young deer at the wooded area near Hills Roundabout in Bray. The fact that it appears to be walking through traffic and showing no fear of humans might sound and look cute but this puts the deer itself and oncoming motorists in danger. I have reported this to the senior roads engineer in Wicklow County Council who has also reported it to TII, the national roads organisation. I suggest extreme caution when driving in this area especially as the Easter Holiday Weekend approaches.

We cannot overlook the human cost of these systemic failures. Anti social use of e-scooters, e-bikes and scrambler bikes is still a scourge in many of our communities in Co. Wicklow. I get many complaints about masked hoodlums driving recklessly and putting innocent lives at risk. A local housing estate in Bray is just the latest place where this lawlessness happened last weekend. I read in today’s Irish Independent where a Garda trying his best to tackle this anti social behaviour in Dublin ends up being prosecuted for dangerous driving!!! This country is gone mad and the blame lies with the Government who are supposed to keep us safe. They are not doing their job, that’s for sure.
