A photo taken during the relocation of the Abu Simbel temple.... In 1960s, one of the greatest archaeological rescue missions in history unfolded on the banks of the Nile. The massive rock temples at Abu Simbel, built by Pharaoh Ramses II in the 13th Century BC, were in danger of disappearing beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser after construction of Egypt’s Aswan High Dam. Between 1964-1968, an international team led by UNESCO carefully cut the temples into more than 1,000 blocks, some weighing up to 30 tons each. The entire complex was moved about 65 meters higher and 200 meters back from its original location, then meticulously reassembled to preserve its original alignment and appearance. The project cost roughly $40 million at the time (over $300 million today) and involved contributions from more than 50 countries, marking one of the first large-scale global heritage collaborations. Engineers preserved the temple’s remarkable solar alignment twice a year, sunlight still penetrates the inner sanctuary to illuminate statues of Ramses II and the gods, just as it did over 3,000 years ago. © Historical Photos #archaeohistories
