Ballymena United Football Club can confirm the end of an era at the Showgrounds, as long serving kitman Bertnel Thompson has decided to retire and call time on 29 years of service to the Sky Blues. The 73-year-old, originally from Ahoghill has served as an institution at the Ballymena Showgrounds working under eight first team managers (Alan Fraser, Nigel Best, Kenny Shiels, Tommy Wright, Roy Walker, Glenn Ferguson, David Jeffrey and Jim Ervin). Despite the best efforts of the current Board of Directors to persuade Bertnel to continue in his role for a milestone 30th season, he informed the club and the new manager on Tuesday evening, that he wishes to step aside to spend more time with his family. Ballymena United Chairman Chris Selwood said, “We’re disappointed to be saying goodbye to Bertnel after 29 wonderful years of service, but we accept his decision that his family must come first. “Bertnel epitomises everything that is great about this club, and whilst he will be missed within the club on matchdays and training nights, we know he won’t be a stranger at the Showgrounds and will always be welcome with open arms. “The club will now look to honour Bertnel Thompson in the coming weeks.” The longest serving team attendant in Irish League football, Thompson joined the Sky Blues in November 1996, having previously held a similar role at Linfield. His introduction had an immediate impact as Alan Frasers’ side defeated Ballyclare Comrades in his first game, en route to the First Division title in the 1996/1997 season. Highlights across the last four decades in the dugout include victories in League Cup, First Division, the County Antrim Shield twice and two promotions as well as eight European ties. So, after 1354 competitive matches, 8 managers, 4 caretaker managers and 444 players, Bertnel has finally hung up his last shirt.
