@Tylopilus Thanks @Tylopilus for the answer. Do I understand you correctly, that you have the time and budget to improve these metrics during development, but in the end often the business as additional scripts to the page afterwards, which worsens these metrics again?

@joerghoh There are tools like partytown which are offering a solution but are not widely adopted. Rule of thumb: 1. measure target audience 2. define lab budget 3. measure in ci 4. create a business case why perf is better than data collection/tracking

I as a traditional backend developer for web stuff use time-to-last-byte (and to a lesser extent time-to-first-byte) as a meaningful metric to measure the performance of my application. 1/n

So, frontend devs here, my question to you: Are such metrics as Lighthouse Score or CWVs important to you? Do you get time to optimize your frontend for user experience? 11/11

But I have yet to see a dedicated phase/deliverable for user experience and frontend performance. Maybe it is done, but given the amount of sites where it obviously did not happen is too large. 10/n

@GergelyOrosz Small teams can move faster, sure. But the headcount of the company itself does not determine if teams are smaller or larger; it is rather the systems they develop/operate and how good their interfaces are, both between teams and systems.

Revising my previous RT. The observation on how smaller teams can move faster is definitely true. However, in case of Twitter, talking to current/past engineers 1. Decommissioning parts of Twitter are hard w domain experts gone 2. Cloud likely makes little $ sense for Twitter

9 uncomfortable truths about engineering and tech right now. How Twitter might play out, the ramifications, and what Elon’s calculus might be. Disclaimer: Don’t shoot the messenger. I’m relaying observations through a lens of engineering for over a decade & managing engineers.
