🚨 Toni Kroos on Ronaldo’s performance against Congo
“I understand the huge pressure Cristiano was under after Messi’s incredible performance against Algeria. This is the World Cup, not a friendly everyone expected him to deliver, but he simply wasn’t at his best against Congo today. He looked tense, forcing shots, creating absolutely nothing, and holding the ball too long instead of trusting his teammates, he was a bit too selfish.
What I still don’t understand is why Roberto left him on for the full match. He created zero chances, yet the coach subbed off Vitinha, Bernardo, Nuno Mendes and other key players the team really needed, while keeping Ronaldo until the final minutes. It felt like he was scared to take him off, just because Messi had scored a hat-trick and he desperately wanted Ronaldo to get a goal. That’s ridiculous.
If they really want to win the World Cup, they shouldn't be building the team around Ronaldo anymore. He has little or nothing left to offer them at this level. This squad has more than enough young, elite stars who are in their prime they are the ones who should be the focal point of the project, not a 41-year-old Ronaldo.
Ronaldo is a fantastic player, but he’s a system player who needs the team to create the platform for him. Messi, on the other hand, carries the team and makes average players look like superstars.
Football is not just about individual glory; it’s about the collective. Cristiano should relax, trust his teammates more, and stop chasing Messi’s shadow. There are still important matches left he will definitely score, I have no doubt.
Messi is a true phenomenon, the kind we’ve rarely seen. The more you try to compete with him, the higher he raises the bar.”
