By the end, only two writers were left. Then one of them didn’t make it. The story is about writing, AI, and who gets to control the ending.

The system learned quickly. One by one, the contracts weren’t renewed. No one was fired. They were just… no longer necessary.

There were twelve writers at the start. They called themselves the Twelve Apostles. Each one specialized in something the machine couldn’t quite do yet—dialogue, irony, structure. Cliffhangers.

This is how it begins: “Alone, I stood between the two lions. For the last seven years, the New York City Research Library on Fifth Avenue had been both my workspace and primary source of income…”

A company hires writers to train an AI to write fiction. Over time, the system improves. Then the writers are no longer needed. I wrote a short story about what happens next. 🧵
