The global wildlife trade—especially in illegal and live-animal markets—is fueling the spread of diseases from animals to humans, according to a new study in Science. The findings show that traded mammals are more than 40% more likely to harbor human-infecting pathogens, with species accumulating more shared pathogens the longer they remain in the trade. They're packed into tiny tubes, posted across continents, and can sell for $220 each. Meet the queen ants at the centre of a thriving and illegal wildlife trade you've probably never heard of. bbc.in/4dcAQdO

Deeply honoured to receive the John Bray Medal for 2025 at a ceremony hosted by Adelaide University at the National Wine Centre. Sincere thanks to Judge Emily Telfer and the John Bray Alumni Network for this honour; to be recognised by my old university in this way is very special. See bit.ly/4tbzuol

Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)
A new step forward at #CMSCOP15: the launch of the Global Initiative on the Taking of Migratory Species (GTI)! Illegal and unsustainable taking of wildlife—driven largely by domestic use for food, local markets, cultural practices, and weak governance—has become one of the most urgent and escalating threats to migratory species worldwide. 🐦🐢 The GTI is expected to be a collaborative global effort under CMS that will bring stakeholders together address the drivers of illegal and unsustainable taking. It aims to improve data and monitoring, strengthen legal and policy frameworks, enhance community engagement, and raise awareness and reduce demand before exploitation escalates into large‑scale trade. 🤝⚖️📊 Watch the special event launch on 25 March at 13:45 Campo Grande / 17:45 London / 21:45 Dubai: youtube.com/watch?v=R_Qg3E…
