This April, we spent a week filming, and sleeping, in one of the last hospitals open in Port Au Prince, Haiti. Tabarre Hospital, run by Doctors Without Borders, has become a lifeline to many people. About 90% of Port Au Prince is in the hands of armed groups. They also control the access roads to the city. Inside many people are trapped, being shot at, raped, robbed, or forced out of their houses. Over a million people are now displaced in Haiti. Rather than heading around the capital trying to film all those problems, we decided to focus on the hospital: it’s staff and patients. We wanted to make an intimate, human documentary about those trying to help in the midst of an almost unmanageable crisis. Our documentary Children of the Darien Gap has just won an Overseas Press Club award. The judges called it “Powerful, poignant, and meticulously reported.” Was quite inspiring to go to the ceremony, see all the other top draw work being recognized and to be alongside it. As Donald Trump prepared to become US president, we climbed aboard a network of cargo trains in Mexico known collectively as The Beast, with migrants still trying to reach the states.
