@dare99 @EricEatsPickles Yes, Darren. A well-known carbrain who doesn't drive or own a car and who played a leading role in opposing destructive urban roadbuilding schemes in the 1980s and 90s.

@Boenau It's very important. I speak as a former chair of RoadPeace, the road victim charity. But it cannot be the only thing in developing a wide-ranging transport strategy.

@JohnJohnStewart Cycle measures that were voted in by the public in clear terms. Expanding cycle lanes is in Sadiq Khan’s manifesto.

@EricEatsPickles It is the righteous certainty you exhibit in spades that leads you to question (shamefully) the motives of others. It's the righteous certainty that re-enforces the need for a debate about the role of cycling in London.

Retail parks had their supporters but also their critics. The issues they raised were debated. Road Safety and the calls for Road Danger Reduction have been the subject of fierce debate over the years. As has most aspects of car use in a way, largely because it languished for so long, has not.

@JohnJohnStewart @Richard45256152 I'm in my 50s, I can't remember national debates on turning residential roads into free car parks, or building massive car-dependent retail parks. Why don't you think that the form of transport that kills, injures and negatively affects health most should be the priority.

Today's Times. We need a crackdown on this nationwide and in London where the survey shows it is at its worst it strengthens my view we need a public debate on the role of cycling. Nobody voted for this.

@manzanotti @Richard45256152 They were effectively debates about the place of the car in urban areas. For example the huge protests against the £13bn Road Assessment Studies in the 1980s led the road schemes being dropped and replaced by Red Routes

@JohnJohnStewart @Richard45256152 Which of those was an in-depth look at the total impact on everyone of car infrastructure and car dependency? I'm not sure you can count a report from over 62 years ago as that, especially as a lot of what it recommended embedded car dependency in town planning.

@manzanotti @Richard45256152 We've effectively had a debate about cars for decades, Paul. From the Buchanan Report in the 1960s, to the road building protests, through Red Routes and the Congestion charge.

@Richard45256152 Spoken like a true cyclist, Richard! A debate would need to include the impact of cycle infrastructure on other road users including disabled people, pedestrians, bus users and businesses. And more!

@JohnJohnStewart The overwhelming number and most serious traffic offences are caused by car drivers. The only debate to be had about cycling is how to make it safer and more accessible.

@BolsoverE @J21581274 But those campaigns against roads though communities helped determine the place of the car in London. For example the defeat of the road schemes in the Road Assessment Studies led directly to the Red Routes.

@JohnJohnStewart @J21581274 The ‘debates’ you’re talking about are whether we should build motorways through neighbourhoods. Not whether we should live continuously around cars. And transport is debated all the time but there’s not equitable position that doesn’t support people’s right to safely cycle

@JohnJohnStewart And yet total miles cycled are a fraction of what they were in (say) the 1950s. People used to cycle much, much more than they do nowadays.

Cars have been debated in London for decades: the Buchanan Report in the 60s, the Homes not Roads campaign in 70s, the massive fight over the roadbuilding proposals in the Road Assessment Studies in the 80, the Red Routes in the 1990s and then the Congestion charge. There has never been the same debate about cycling. There is some truth in that certain assumptions have been made about cars, particularly around Road safety. But casualty numbers have fallen a lot though much more needs to be done. Who knows what the outcome would be of a wide-ranging debate on cycling?

@JohnJohnStewart @J21581274 This is a very odd framing. Cars are barely debated at all in any meaningful way. Their presence and all the associated harms for those who use them and those who don’t are just assumed. What exactly is the possible outcome of a debate on cycling - that we discourage it??

It needs to be a London wide debate looking at questions like the impact of cycling on other road users, whether investment in mass people movers - tube and train - would be better for London's economy than encouraging commuter cycling etc. Etc. Cars have been with us for a very long time and there have been constant debates about them from the Buchanan Report in the 1960s onwards. The same debate has not taken place about cycling.

@JohnJohnStewart @J21581274 This 5% figure is only if you include all the outer boroughs where it’s apparently normal to drive everywhere. In central London - which is where this e-bike moral panic you’re stoking is based - the figures are much higher especially around commuter times.

@dahontr3 But it is about much more than choice. It is the impact of cycling on other road users. It needs look at whether or not investment in the mass people movers - the tube and the train - rather than commuting cycling benefits London's economy more in the long run. Etc. Etc.

@JohnJohnStewart Nobody voted for car dependency. If you argue they do did by exercising “choice” (in practice more of a nudge) then you have to accept what we are seeing is choice in operating regarding cycling and micro mobility.

@J21581274 Though still less than 5% of trips in London are by bike. But there has been growth, much of it pretty chaotic and impacting on other road users. That's why there needs to be a debate!
