2/ Benjamin argued that photography didn’t eliminate painting. It changed it. It altered its “aura.”

1/ I have a new essay in JAMA on AI and the future of medicine. It draws on Walter Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.”

Vale mucho la pena leerlo 👇 The Lost Aura of the Physician in the Age of Artificial Intelligence jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…

@haroldpollack Every yahrzeit feels fresh. My dad’s been gone 17 years. I still have dreams about him usually around his yahrzeit. May his memory be a blessing for you

This past week also marked my father's Yartzeit, lost four years ago. I think of him so often. He is deeply missed.

What if your genome predicted that you'd become a murderer. And what if you were furious at your ex-wife's new lover, and your teenage daughter's cheating boyfriend. is predictive genomics an alibi? johnlantos.com/post/can-bioet…

A Netflix film about IVF gets some things right, makes up other things, and ignores controversies about eugenics, ableism, and research oversight. Such fictionalizations explain why this technology has not been a victim of the culture wars. johnlantos.com/post/ivf-cultu…

AI and genomics both promise to revolutionize the practice of medicine. Both are being developed in ways that cannibalize existing data to find predictive patterns - one in our language, the other in our DNA. I examine some of the implications.

Since 2017, gender dysphoria (GD) diagnoses tripled, the age at diagnosis fell, and women with the diagnosis now outnumber men. These trends raise many questions. Good research is crucial, but most research on GD simply sucks.

Carl Elliott’s book is essential reading for anybody concerned about biomedical research and the protection of people who participate in research. Does innovation require an occasional human sacrifice? Do researchers need the courage to fail? johnlantos.com/post/human-sac…

Echoes of Faulkner everywhere. “This book is a conversation with ghosts.” And again, “Whistleblowers need a story that explains what has happened and does not leave them feeling broken and meaningless. The problem is finding that story.” Faulkner was on a similar quest.
