I talk a lot about how great the old 'Sunday Age' sports section used to be. Thought I'd give an example. This is an issue picked at random, July 4 1993, 16 pages from a 24-page section (haven't included details & racing stuff, sorry). Full-time Sunday Age staff at this stage included me, Mike Sheahan, Richard Hinds, Gerard Wright, Linda Pearce, Jake Niall (based in US), Stephen Howell, Mark Ray, Stephen Moran & sports editor Ken Merrigan. We had full-time contributors like Michael Lovett, James Weston, Nick Place, Michael Roberts & Laurie Schwab...
For Saturday coverage we used daily Age staff including Greg Baum, Martin Blake, Stephen Linnell, Penny Crisp, Ashley Browne & Greg Denham. We also had regular analysts like Barry Richardson, Gareth Andrews, Laurie Serafini, Dwayne Russell & John Hendrie (football), Dean Jones, Brendan McArdle (cricket) & Mark Woodforde (tennis).
It may not look as 'flash' as The Age or Herald-Sun now. But the content is so much better it's in a different universe. I will back the depth & quality of this against any sports section I've been part of or even just read. This really was the golden age of journalism (pages to follow)...

The Age’s Greg Baum has just left the press box to a standing ovation after his last MCG Test. Nothing less than he deserved. A master wordsmith, great tourist and ripper bloke, Baumy is a much treasured one-off. He supports Collingwood but I never said he was perfect.
