Monday morning latest : The EU Commissioner for Democracy Michael McGrath has been asked to urgently intervene today in a procedural row that could see attempts by the EU  Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to  proceed with the implementation of the EU Mercosur trade deal before democratic ratification by the European Parliament . MEP Ciaran Mullooly has written this morning to Commissioner McGrath asking him to personally contact President von der Leyen and “stop these attempts to side-step the European Parliament who have a legal and legislative role in the final rejection or ratification of the deal.” MEP Mullooly has asked for an urgent meeting with the Commissioner in the next 48 hours to discuss the situation  and will today deliver a petition signed by over 30,000 people against the trade deal going ahead after a public protest in Athlone organised by the Independent Ireland party  last Saturday . “To ignore the procedures established under European treaties and proceed with implementation without the vote of the parliament would be  dangerous and highly  irresponsible and hugely damaging to the relationship  between the European Citizens and the Commission. ends letter to Commissioner attached sent to Commissioner McGraths office Commissioner McGrath Brussels     Jan 12, 2026 Dear Commissioner,   On Saturday last almost 30,000 people marched all over Ireland in protest to the EU Mercosur trade agreement.   A mandate was given to me as an MEP elected on behalf of 1.8 million people in Ireland midlands and north west  to return to Brussels today and oppose the implementation of this agreement on grounds that is threatens public health standards – and the econony of Ireland's most significant indigenous industries – Agriculture which employs over 400,000 people in a full time and part time capacity.   Yesterday EU Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier confirmed President von der Leyen’s plans to travel to Paraquay on Saturday next January 17th  to sign this deal despite the FACT that this agreement cannot proceed unless it is ratified by myself and over 700 members of the European Parliament - as you well know from our Commission and Parliament procedures.  Such a move would not only be not appropriate but it would be UNFAIR and highly disrespectful to the members of the European parliament and the people of Ireland - were it to go ahead .    On top of this I have been made aware of reported plans to try and inplement this trade deal at an early stage and without any vote in our parliament.   Accordingly as the Commissioner nominated by the Government of Ireland on behalf of this member state , I am now publicly calling on you to meet urgently with the President von der Leyen and formally ask her to postpone any such plan to travel to south American or implement this deal before a vote and respect the democratic process at the heart of the European project.   To do anything else would have severe implications in my opinion for the relationship and the standing of not just the Commission but you as Commisioner with the people of Ireland.   I would therefore like to seek an urgent meeting with you in Brussels to discuss this important situation within the next 48 hrs.   I am in my office today in the Parliament and available to meet at any time . Sunday morning and I draw the curtains. Jesus what a horrible sight ! Its grey dark and the sky looks to be on the ground. The scene mirrors the way I feel after yesterday evenings result in the football with The Dubs beating us in our own backyard by a point. I have to face them at Punchestown today, putting on a smiley face and let their banter roll off me. Oh the thoughts of it ! Problem is I’m used to it now sure they have us where they want us for the past decade and a half. Pick up the phone check whats happening in the world, is Trump giving us a laugh today ? Wallop ! I know Mikey, not well but I know him. Sure we are both part of the same community. The racing community. We move from town to town like a circus. Same clowns different towns. As I get older I appreciate the younger generations. They make me smile and I learn from them. Little life lessons like new slang words, phone and computer shortcuts, that type of stuff. Sure they know it all ! Mikey is a step above the youngest generation I interact with. There is a group of 16-17 year olds riding. Mikey is 24. I love capturing their 1st success on the track and then watching them achieve their goals and dreams. Cheltenham is every jump jockey’s dream and in March 2023 we saw Mikey grab his dream twice in the one day. Glorious,Great and Gracious, Mikey stole the show in the biggest circus.If you hadn’t seen the results you wouldn’t have known it. His cap still fitted his head, his walk didn’t alter and his tongue didn’t let him down. Pure humble hi. The last few days everything I have read and heard spoken about him is true. It makes me wish I knew him better. Makes me wish I spent time in his company socially. Makes me wish…… Mikey you are a credit to your family and friends. May God speed you on that motorway and wrap his loving arms around you X
