Freetown's Mariama Whitmore Hails LAMATA's SUMConference25, Iconic Blue Line
Mariama Whitmore, Monitoring and Performance Consultant for the Freetown City Council, Sierra Leone, has praised the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) for an "enriching experience" following her participation in the SUMConference25 and a subsequent tour of the operational Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue & Red Rail lines.
Whitmore, who attended the conference to showcase the Freetown Cable Car Project, extended a heartfelt thanks to LAMATA for the invitation.
She called it an "honour" to present Freetown's project on such a significant platform.
On behalf of the Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Akinajo, a member of the Corporate Communication Unit, Bolaji Aluko-Olokun gave the delegate a comprehensive tour of Lagos’ transportation system.
The experience began at the Ikeja Bus Terminal, where Whitmore explored the station, including the interchange points between the buses.
The tour culminated in a visit to the Red Line Train station, Ikeja bus terminal and a ride on the iconic Blue Line, beginning at the Marina Station to Mile 2 .
Whitmore expressed her admiration for the "forward thinking thoughts that has been built into the design," noting the system's focus on passenger safety.
She was particularly impressed by the system's inclusivity, noting the use of a local language in addition to English for announcements, which ensures no one is left behind.
"Seeing the system in action and witnessing the level of public engagement was both encouraging and inspiring," Whitmore stated.
She commendes the entire LAMATA team for their "warm hospitality" and "invaluable insights," adding that she looks forward to a return trip to ride the Red Line and "seamlessly connect to the Blue Line at National Theatre."
