He opened his calendar app and showed me the contact name for the unsaved number. It was the coordinator for a luxury pottery studio downtown. "Alex" wasn't a coworker. Alex was a 62-year-old master ceramicist. My boyfriend had spent the last three weeks secretly taking private pottery lessons after work so he could surprise me by hand-making a replica of the ceramic vase I accidentally broke on our first anniversary. The "secret rendezvous" was his final glazing session. I’ve never apologized so fast in my entire life.

a cab driver in taipei told me that taiwanese tmsc workers universally dread going to america for business trips. he said that americans leave for happy hour while taiwanese people have to stay behind to finish their work. this makes them feel really uncomfortable and unhappy, like they’re second class citizens despite the fact that they come from HQ. sad and upsetting to hear, although unsurprising. i asked him if those workers ever believe tsmc america will surpass tsmc taiwan. taiwanese consensus is that americans simply lack the work ethic and attention to detail to ever close the gap.

Bye bye San Francisco 👋 It was my first time in the USA, so here is what surprised me: - SF is like X IRL. Tons of billboards ads for Vercel, PostHog, and AI startups - You can bump into anyone and start a conversation. Ppl are very friendly - Food is mediocre imho - It’s expensive AF. $10k/mo is just above survival - The tech grind is contagious. Makes you wanna ship more, as @sobedominik said. - Air quality is awesome (very low PM2.5) - You go from multibillion startup office to super poor area in 1 block (note to self: don’t follow Google Maps “busy area”) - The city is infested by self driving cars.
