💯 this, and I’m once again begging libertarian-type tech people to understand that a “VPN ban” or Chat Control doesn’t mean they’re going to prevent you specifically from using a VPN or an encrypted messenger. It means when they catch you doing so, they’ll use that fact itself as a pretense to lock you up without needing to do any “hard work” like actually confirming whether you committed a real crime. Don’t think you won’t be impacted just because you know how to outsmart an ISP filter!
Taylor Lorenz@TaylorLorenz

They won't be able to use VPNs! The end goal of these legal efforts both here and in the UK is to completely eliminate the ability to consume content anonymously or use the internet anonymously. That's where this is headed if we don't kill these "child safety" laws

@privacy_guides @dranok4ever I actually like plex. In my experience it’s much easier to set up then Jellyfin and runs just as good. I paid for plex lifetime, a few years back, because of its simplicity and ease of use.

@cursedhat That’s why she stole Whittaker’s badge, but also why in the world would this be illegal? 🤔

also there’s no way to secretly access your chart because you’ll immediately get flagged. so realistically al-hashimi would be fired in about a month when they realize what happened.

Cindy Cohn: "You don't found an organization committed to digital liberties and hire fighty lawyers like me if you think [the digital world] is magically going to be better" 💯

@privacy_guides @brave if you're taking feedback, I'd almost want an "Origin Mode" for regular Brave too, where owning an Origin license disables all the same current *and future* features that are removed in Origin by default, but I still have the option to enable some of them if I want to.

@jonaharagon The whole point of the EFF is to protect all forms of online nonsense. Locking comments and leaving, is the exact opposite of why I donated to EFF for 20 years.

I fear the EFF’s problem is that X’s algorithm was *too accurately* showing their social media manager a ton of stupid botted political nonsense because it knows that’s what elicits an emotional response *from them,* but it eventually made them write off X as a lost cause as a result. What X shows *me* is basically a bunch of people watching The Pitt and people interested in tech news. That’s how *I* know real live people still use this app for whatever reason. The X algorithm knowing too much about exactly what triggers people is a whole ‘nother privacy nightmare, but it’s probably important to remember that people still exist outside of whatever dumb silo you find yourself in.

We love the Electronic Frontier Foundation, they’re fighting the good fight 💪 But, we’re not leaving X like them. And the reason is simple: We think all the reasons the EFF shared about staying on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok still apply here too!

@Amethys797058 I think they only supported the part that makes online intermediaries not liable for content, which is pretty based actually. Section 230 for the EU 👌

@jonaharagon You're the EFF, you have immense responsibilities, and 5 bots are enough to make you leave a platform ? The EFF initially supported the DSA law, which is in reality a law for censorship and control of the internet in Europe.
