@thepearsonified @KylePorterNS First off 18 at Torrey is a par 5. Also I agree with you with that firm and fast conditions and contours produce the best golf. But chambers isn’t it. The slopes are way too severe and gimmicky for major championships. Too many good shots end up penalized by ridiculous slopes.

@jonahcirulnick @KylePorterNS No, Torrey Pines is a terrible venue that’s received too much attention The drama of 08 was good, but it doesn’t have the closing par 5 or the continuous drama of balls rolling on contours—two points I specifically highlighted as things that elevate a championship

You could argue that the PGA Championship (at its best at places like Kiawah, Southern Hills and Aronimink) has better U.S. Open setups than the actual U.S. Open.

@jonahcirulnick @KylePorterNS Erin Hills, perhaps But that statement makes no sense in the context of Chambers Bay, which had it all: • Winning score of just -5 • Seemingly endless run of balls rolling on contours • High drama on the 72nd hole (a closing par 5, no less)

@jonahcirulnick @KylePorterNS Yea one of the greatest ever beat everyone and it was the best location ever for a Ryder cup. Plus ranked hardest in the US especially when wind blows.

@thepearsonified @KylePorterNS Players and even Gary player were ripping the course apart. Speith said the 18th hole is the dumbest golf hole he has ever played. Modern links courses are not designed for pro golf.

@KylePorterNS Kiawah will definitely determine the best golfer. It has everything.

@Cam_Jourdan So many greens and tees next to each other where players have to wait for a different hole to finish before they can play. Not ideal, but some courses just have these bottlenecks that can’t be avoided

@ntl0022 @KylePorterNS I respect Pete dye but his courses are nothing compared to golden age golf courses. His courses are repetitive and artificial where golden age courses are natural and they make you think about every shot.

@KylePorterNS Completely agree. Honestly thus far I prefer Aronimink to even Oakmont last year. Overall if I were to rank my top 5 US Open / PGA courses (just the course, not the vibe) I would go: 1) Kiawah 2) Shinnecock 3) Southern Hills 4) Brookline 5) LACC

@Italiavol6 @KylePorterNS trust between properties and the USGA is essential for a good us open. The masters is held at the same course every year and it’s perfectly set up because of consistency.

@jonahcirulnick @KylePorterNS “Fixed” it with courses? Chambers was won at -5 while Pinehurst was at -6 and Pebble at -13 last time they hosted. Erin was the only par 72 setup in ages. The USGA has a set up problem, not a course problem. Chambers and Erin Hills deserve another shot

@BowTied_Golfer @KylePorterNS Drought and trying to have fescue greens were the issue, not the USGA. Chambers switched to poa after the us open and it’s made the course better. You can blame Rees jones and weather.

@KylePorterNS the obsession with making the winning score even par ruined the USGAs reputation and ability to set up golf courses.

@gman26 Literally said that people should be surprised opening round lead because nobody cares what you won 10 years ago, you ain’t winning now, and nobody would know if we’re because no one watches your shit golf tour anyways. Geoff has no filter and I am here for it.
