I just had a very brief meeting with the Lebanese Chief of Defense General Rodolphe Haykal. I asked him point blank if he believes Hezbollah is a terrorist organization. He said, “No, not in the context of Lebanon.” With that, I ended the meeting.
They are clearly a terrorist organization. Hezbollah has American blood on its hands. Just ask the U.S. Marines.
They have been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by both Republican and Democrat administrations since 1997 – for good reason.
As long as this attitude exists from the Lebanese Armed Forces, I don’t think we have a reliable partner in them.
I am tired of the double speak in the Middle East. Too much is at stake.

#Lebanon will flourish once again, beautiful and vigorous like the cedar, a symbol of the people’s unity and fruitfulness. The strength of the cedar lies in its roots. In the same way, the many good things we see in Lebanese society today are the result of the humble, hidden and honest work of so many people of good will, of the many good roots. Draw from the good roots of those dedicated to serving society. Be the source of hope that the country is waiting for! #ApostolicJourney

The incredibly beautiful moment when Pope Leo XIV enters the Monastery of St. Maroun as the choir sings an ancient hymn to Saint Charbel, first in Arabic, then in Syriac. Watch to the end, when the Pope pauses in silence to pray before the shrine of St. Charbel, a profoundly important spot for Lebanese Christians.

Press Statement from the Syria Prisons Museum
At approximately 3:00 p.m. Damascus time on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Syrian authorities arrested journalist and human-rights advocate Amer Matar, the founding director of the Syria Prisons Museum, at the al-Jdeideh border crossing. The arrest comes only days after the museum opened its space inside the National Museum in Damascus, a move that unmistakably targets freedom of expression and the memory of victims.
The Syria Prisons Museum condemns this arrest in the strongest possible terms. Our colleague, Amer Matar—a former political prisoner in the Assad regime’s prisons and a key witness before the Koblenz court in Germany against members of the regime’s security services—has been a voice for survivors of detention and torture. His arrest is an act of reprisal devoid of any legitimacy. He was taken into custody unlawfully, in a manner that recalls the patterns of arbitrary arrest that marked the regime’s earlier era—practices we reject outright.
Museum staff have been prevented from learning where he is held or which authority seized him, amid a total blackout regarding his fate. We hold the Syrian authorities, and the Ministry of Interior in particular, fully responsible for Amer Matar’s safety. We demand immediate disclosure of his whereabouts and the reasons for his arrest, and his prompt release.
We at the Syria Prisons Museum reaffirm our commitment to defending freedom of expression and human rights in Syria. We regard the arrest of Amer Matar as a direct assault on the memory of victims and on every effort that seeks justice and dignity.
