@jason_koebler This balkanization isn’t new and I don’t see how the current TikTok situation fundamentally changes the trajectory. Reciprocity is an even more fundamental foreign policy principle than promoting an open internet and openness doesn’t work if it’s unidirectional.

I do not think we can credibly say we support a global open internet while having a policy of "we're going to unconstitutionally cut more than half of our population off from the rest of the world." We are balkanizing the internet / building a splinternet rn

New from 404 Media: New Jersey spent $35 million on banned Chinese surveillance cameras. Much of that was COVID relief funds. Court case says some of the cameras sold to New Jersey agencies were the Chinese cameras with their logos removed 404media.co/new-jersey-use…

As much as I've railed over the years about how hard it is to notify so many companies about legit security issues and breaches, this post was long overdue. krebsonsecurity.com/2021/09/does-y…

I wrote about Delta and why we should not surrender to our dysfunction. There's much to be done, from vaccine mandates (yes, yes, it's time) to strong mitigations in schools (the "unvaccinated" include ~50 million children under 12) to response to surges. nytimes.com/2021/07/24/opi…

Jen Easterly & Chris Inglis same day confirmation hearing. Voted unanimously out of cmte together. They’re both clearly qualified. He was confirmed today, she was not. Why? Politics over NatSec, that’s why. @CISAgov deserves better. We deserve better. Confirm Jen now.

I'd love to hear @BradSmi explanation on this. I know Microsoft censor for the CCP in China, but this search is from the US.

@KimZetter I respect his expertise but that definition takes zero day to the point of having zero meaning.

He points to the fact that CVEs were created for these issues and Siemens eliminated both the feature and the hardcoded password under pressure, post-Stuxnet. Eric believes this shows that they were 0-days. Others may agree that if there are CVEs then it's a 0-day. I don't.

This has gotten a lot of attention in last months and people have tried to bring me into the argument because my book states that Stuxnet used 5 zero-days (one patched before Stuxnet launched so only 4 at time of launch). Liam, Eric and I disagree on what constitutes a 0-day.
Liam O'Murchu@liam_omurchu

I was a source @nicoleperlroth used to fact check Stuxnet details. #Stuxnet used more than 4 0days even if the Wikipedia article @tarah refers to says differently - but we should view Stuxnet in terms of impact rather than its count of 0days as @nicoleperlroth goes on to say.

@KimZetter The hype around this threat is right but it’s just misplaced - the focus needs to be less on the threat actors and more on how critical infrastructure needs to urgently take measures to better defend itself from inevitably being targeted.

@jkylemann I think it comes down to Jordan not being nearly as unique as Lebron physically - there have been plenty of close approximations to Jordan whereas there has never been an athlete with Lebron’s unique combination of gifts which makes it harder to compare someone to him.

was thinking this morning about how often we heard 'jordanesque' and 'the next jordan' back in the 1995-2003 range... it was *constant* whereas today (maybe it's just me) i feel like i basically never hear 'the next lebron' or 'lebronesque'?

We've been hearing a lot about a surveillance gap since SolarWinds hack was exposed. Officials call it a “blind spot,” a "visibility" issue and an authorities “gap." But they've been vague about what they mean by it. Turns out it's not quite what you think zetter.substack.com/p/mind-the-gap…

Blown away that some of the largest media outlets including NYT and WaPo still have nothing about this mass Exchange server hack on hundreds of thousands of organizations. Esp. now that govies are saying it's a giant mess domestically and worldwide. krebsonsecurity.com/2021/03/at-lea…

Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz constantly bash the Chinese Communist Party. They have just done more to undermine democracy worldwide and promote the CCP's authoritarian model than any US Senators in my lifetime.
