I appreciate @JSweetLI’s reporting confirming today that Salvatore Nuara, Zurab Mikeladze, Leonid Leonov, and Nicola Caputo were just part of a photo line up and are not connected to Epstein's crimes. I wish DOJ had provided that explanation earlier instead of redacting then unredacting their names. They have failed to protect survivors, created confusion for innocent men, and have protected rich and powerful abusers. We must have full transparency and the truth.

Bought this recently released XikeStor USB 3.2 Gen2 network adapter. It uses the power efficient (<2W) 10Gbps Realtek RTL8159 chip. On Linux with the latest Realtek driver I was able to achieve 8.6 Gbps.

@YunTaTsai1 What years were you at Nokia? My 9110 was confiscated in Norway in 2000 because I had a backup of the DeCSS source code on it. A news article at the time mentioned it and a fan in the US bought me a new one!

When I was at Nokia, we had a big debate to remove the physical keyboards and go all-in to the touch screen. The engineers at US tried to convince the engineers in Finland that it was a better design with a slimmer profile and touch screen only. We even demonstrated some apps on iPod Touch with some concept experiences. “What if touch screen stopped working?” “It does not work with big thumbs” “Customers would feel insecure without physical buttons.” In the end, the Finnish engineers gave us thousands of reasons why touch screen only was bad. The US engineers were frustrated because they could see the writing on the wall. Then we realized it was very difficult to for a company to give up its legacy crutches. Almost never.

There were rocks and seaweed scattered around, so the ship must have scraped along quite smoothly. We were lucky. If it had been on a slightly different course, it would have hit the house.” The priority now is stabilizing the vessel, minimizing environmental impact, and using the next high tide to refloat her.

Energy Star Program. Outlets like CNN, Washington Post, TechCrunch, Fast Company, etc are running headlines saying Trump is killing a program that saves Americans $40B per year. This number comes from the program's own 2024 annual report. The claim is not so much a lie as insane. They take credit for all energy efficiency gains since 1992, even non-Energy Star devices and devices that go far beyond the standard. The report assumes all energy efficiency improvements are the result of their certification label, as if no progress would have occurred otherwise. It doesn't acknowledge the higher price of compliant appliances, either, effectively pretending they have remained constant since 1992. Nobody actually believes any of this, so why is it being reported without criticism by supposed experts?

There's no need to spend taxpayer dollars on this program in perpetuity. Europe's high energy prices already incentivizes manufacturers to make their devices energy efficient.

Not once in my life have I looked for the Energy Star certification when buying an appliance/device. In fact, the last time I even remember seeing the Energy Star logo was in the days of CRT monitors.

@0xJoIris @antoniogm Of course there are things that are better in Europe. The pathetic power rating to most European homes is not one of them. If your 3-phase service is 25A/phase (most common in CZ), you'll have ~5kW leftover for other appliances when the aforementioned sauna heater is running.

@jonlech @antoniogm I'm in Czech Republic and I have 3 phases at home. It's easy to get if you want it. Didn't have power outage in like 5 years and 5 years ago it was for like 5 minutes. This failure to admit that anything could be better out of U.S. is extremely cringe.

@antoniogm The europoors can't afford to have a 10.5kW sauna heater at home. Not just due to expensive power, but also because they would barely be able to power anything else in the home at the same time.
