Nearly 25 years after his death in anonymity in the very city he helped save, Gopal Chandra Mukherjee, better known as Gopal Patha, is gaining a cult status across India. These are the first ever depictions of what Gopal Mukherjee did in order to counter Muslim League's direct action day plan in Kolkata in 1946. In doing so, Gopal resorted to violence, which has never been approved by most Bengalis due to their Gandhian outlook. However, his admirers feel that had Gopal not done what he did, Kolkata and other parts of west Bengal would have gone to east Pakistan. Its impact on India would have been devastating.
