What about if you teach kids things, talk about the importance of relationships AND put flowers in your hair? Do you have to have flowers in your hair to talk about relationships? I don’t. Is there a link between flowers and not teaching that I’m unaware of? Blimey, who knew…
Greg Ashman@greg_ashman

You can put flowers in your hair and talk about the importance of relationships, but if you’re not actually teaching kids things then you’re not a teacher.

I actually think "adaptive teaching" is a worse term than "differentiation" It's certainly no better

@Chem2006 @Gwenelope @JohnBaldLangLit We could, if we had the time needed. And the training. But we don’t. We’re only well placed because we’re the only agency who can’t “no further action”

@joon_of @Gwenelope @JohnBaldLangLit Trouble is, schools are relatively extremely effective and well placed to do these things. They are perhaps the one area of public service that actually functions well. So, I totally agree with your point, but also… schools do it better than anyone else

Schools are wild at the moment. No one has enough time to do all the things they have to do. This results in increased scrutiny, often with very little in the way of actual, practical support. We all want to do all the bits as well as we can. It’s just impossible though.

@SharonRobe61510 Plus, even when you’ve decided the thing to do, another thing will arrive right in front of you. That takes half an hour and you’re still left with 5 things 😳

@joon_of I reckon that, at any given moment, there are 5 things that you should be doing. You can only do 1 of them. Knowing which 1 of the 5 to do and which 4 to leave is a black art - and of course anyone can pick you up on the fact that you haven't done one or more of the 4...

@joon_of @greeborunner @TheSecretTchr The problem is that reduced resources means that we can’t do all we used to which means that it’s harder to find the guilt free line of “I’ve done enough”. This is especially tough when other services are cut and we’re increasingly the last line as well as the first one.

@adamboxer1 I wonder if there’s something about the structure too? One teacher v many teachers? Although I’d have guessed this would lead the data in the other direction.

@joon_of yes, excellent point. bigger students are...bigger. and often the same thing said by two different students can land very differently.

Why are poor behaviours more prevalent in primary classrooms? There are some theories below, interested in hearing yours too. To be clear, I don't think all of these theories are correct. Theory 1: students are younger, generally a bit less socially aware, generally do weirder things (of course, those things are still *disruptive* and the primary teachers in the poll are clearly calling them disruptive, they don't think these behaviours are "ok") Theory 2: a lot of these disruptions stem from "sins of enthusiasm" (Lemov). Primary teachers are less grumpy than secondary teachers, and don't want to squash that enthusiasm Theory 3: the stakes are lower. A student inappropriately calling out in primary might be trying to provide an answer, whereas in secondary they might be saying "are you dumb" to a peer. This will then end up in widespread disruption and significant problems. Secondary teachers therefore work harder to stop the problems earlier. Theory 4: primary teachers are worse at behaviour management than secondary ones Theory 5: primary schools have less robust behaviour policies than secondary ones TO BE VERY CLEAR: I do not think all of these theories are correct. But they are plausible interpretations.

@Gwenelope That’s very stressful - and anxiety producing in a particularly hard way. Yes, it is. This last term has been especially awful. It’s just *impossible* to do everything.

@joon_of It’s been difficult £££-wise which then has its own stresses - but it’s up to me to improve my lot, eh? Schools seem to be getting harder and harder to work in right now, that true for you Joon?

@greeborunner @TheSecretTchr There’s a weird acceptance that you’ll never get to the end of the list. Even if you’re efficient. Even if you go a “normal” above and beyond. Hope you’re doing well Zoe? 🥰

@TheSecretTchr @joon_of I think part of the issue is a culture of above and beyond. While there are times when every job needs a little bit more, always doing more is the mantra in education, often with a smile on the face, while there's tears in the background
