@joseph_ragman Good to know. I think volunteering to keep ppl safe during a protest is a really noble decision, and I hope most of the ppl I’m seeing out there do have at least basic training! There’s just no qualification process to stop someone from taping a red ➕on their helmet
I’ve covered protests in Baltimore for 2 weeks straight now and in that time, the first and ONLY dude to scream in my face about taking their photo was one of those water bottles ‘medics’
@y00lz There has been a huge surge in interest in becoming a medic, which is awesome, but some people have been presenting themselves as medics without the consent of dedicated, existing medic collectives.
@y00lz Street medics have received a 20-hour training from other experienced street medics; medical professionals who agree to operate by the principles of street medics can be accepted to those collectives and trained in an 8-hour "bridge" training; and they almost never work alone.
@y00lz It's worth noting that a lot of people marking themselves as medics (usually with red tape) are not operating in the tradition of street medics and are risking people's safety by doing so.
