Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) Terms & Abbreviations Every Investor Should Know (Beginner Guide 2026) If you’re investing or planning to invest at the Nairobi Securities Exchange, understanding the language of the market is not optional. Whether you’re trading via a broker, using a mobile platform, or analyzing company results — these are the most commonly used NSE terms and abbreviations explained in simple English. 1️⃣ Basic Market Terms 📌 NSE Nairobi Securities Exchange — Kenya’s official stock exchange where shares, bonds, REITs and ETFs are traded. 📌 CDSC Central Depository and Settlement Corporation — The institution that holds shares electronically and settles trades. 📌 CDS Account Your electronic securities account where shares are held. Think of it like a bank account — but for shares. 2️⃣ Trading & Order Types 📌 Bid Price The highest price a buyer is willing to pay. 📌 Ask (Offer) Price The lowest price a seller is willing to accept. 📌 Bid-Ask Spread The difference between the bid and ask price. Wide spread = lower liquidity. 📌 Market Order Buy or sell immediately at the best available price. 📌 Limit Order Buy or sell at a specific price you set. Best for disciplined retail investors. 📌 T+3 (Settlement Cycle) Trade date plus 3 days. If you buy shares today, official settlement happens 3 business days later. 3️⃣ Company Financial Terms These are terms we’ve used when reviewing earnings like BOC Kenya and other NSE counters: 📌 Revenue Total sales generated by a company. 📌 PAT (Profit After Tax) Net income after all expenses and taxes. 📌 EPS (Earnings Per Share) Profit divided by number of shares. Used to measure profitability per share. 📌 Operating Cash Flow (OCF) Cash generated from core business activities. 📌 Free Cash Flow (FCF) Cash left after capital expenditure. Important for dividends and reinvestment. 📌 Total Assets Everything the company owns. 📌 Equity Shareholders’ ownership value in the company. 📌 Borrowings Debt the company owes. 4️⃣ Valuation Ratios Every NSE Investor Must Know 📌 P/E Ratio (Price to Earnings) Price per share ÷ Earnings per share. High P/E = market expects growth. Low P/E = potentially undervalued (or struggling). 📌 Dividend Yield Annual dividend ÷ Share price. Popular among income investors. 📌 Book Value Company’s net asset value. 📌 Price-to-Book (P/B) Share price ÷ Book value per share. Common in banking and asset-heavy stocks. 5️⃣ Market Performance Indicators 📌 NSE All Share Index (NASI) Tracks performance of all listed shares. 📌 NSE 20 Share Index Tracks 20 top-performing companies. 📌 Market Capitalization (Market Cap) Share price × total shares outstanding. Indicates company size. 📌 Volume Number of shares traded. 📌 Turnover Total value of shares traded. 6️⃣ Corporate Actions 📌 Dividend Cash paid to shareholders. 📌 Bonus Issue Free shares issued to existing shareholders. 📌 Rights Issue Existing shareholders get opportunity to buy more shares at a discounted price. 📌 Stock Split Increase in number of shares while reducing price proportionally. 7️⃣ Investor Categories 📌 Retail Investor Individual investor (you and me). 📌 Institutional Investor Large entities like pension funds and insurance companies. 📌 Foreign Investor Non-Kenyan investors — currently account for a large portion of NSE activity. 8️⃣ Risk & Strategy Terms 📌 Liquidity How easily you can buy or sell a stock without affecting price. 📌 Volatility How much a stock price moves up and down. 📌 Diversification Spreading investments across sectors to reduce risk. 📌 Bull Market Market trending upward. 📌 Bear Market Market trending downward. 9️⃣ Fixed Income Terms: Since many Kenyan investors also buy bonds: 📌 Treasury Bill (T-Bill) Short-term government debt (91, 182, 364 days). 📌 Treasury Bond (T-Bond) Long-term government debt (2–30 years). 📌 Yield Return earned on a bond.
