Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) Terms & Abbreviations Every Investor Should Know (Beginner Guide 2026)
If you’re investing or planning to invest at the Nairobi Securities Exchange, understanding the language of the market is not optional.
Whether you’re trading via a broker, using a mobile platform, or analyzing company results — these are the most commonly used NSE terms and abbreviations explained in simple English.
1️⃣ Basic Market Terms
📌 NSE
Nairobi Securities Exchange — Kenya’s official stock exchange where shares, bonds, REITs and ETFs are traded.
📌 CDSC
Central Depository and Settlement Corporation — The institution that holds shares electronically and settles trades.
📌 CDS Account
Your electronic securities account where shares are held.
Think of it like a bank account — but for shares.
2️⃣ Trading & Order Types
📌 Bid Price
The highest price a buyer is willing to pay.
📌 Ask (Offer) Price
The lowest price a seller is willing to accept.
📌 Bid-Ask Spread
The difference between the bid and ask price.
Wide spread = lower liquidity.
📌 Market Order
Buy or sell immediately at the best available price.
📌 Limit Order
Buy or sell at a specific price you set.
Best for disciplined retail investors.
📌 T+3 (Settlement Cycle)
Trade date plus 3 days.

3️⃣ Company Financial Terms
These are terms we’ve used when reviewing earnings like BOC Kenya and other NSE counters:
📌 Revenue
Total sales generated by a company.
📌 PAT (Profit After Tax)
Net income after all expenses and taxes.

📌 Equity

📌 Borrowings
Debt the company owes.
4️⃣ Valuation Ratios Every NSE Investor Must Know
📌 P/E Ratio (Price to Earnings)
Price per share ÷ Earnings per share.
High P/E = market expects growth.
Low P/E = potentially undervalued (or struggling).
📌 Dividend Yield
Annual dividend ÷ Share price.
Popular among income investors.
📌 Book Value
Company’s net asset value.
📌 Price-to-Book (P/B)
Share price ÷ Book value per share.
Common in banking and asset-heavy stocks.
5️⃣ Market Performance Indicators
📌 NSE All Share Index (NASI)
Tracks performance of all listed shares.
📌 NSE 20 Share Index
Tracks 20 top-performing companies.
📌 Market Capitalization (Market Cap)
Share price × total shares outstanding.
Indicates company size.
📌 Volume

6️⃣ Corporate Actions

7️⃣ Investor Categories
📌 Retail Investor
