Normal life is impossible for Tiberius on a multitude of levels but the main one is that he can never show his face in public, be called by his name or touch anything with his bare hands. Those societal restrictions make it impossible to have any form of intimacy or personal relationships with any one. It’s so extreme that he has to ceremonially erase his individuality and personal desires on a daily basis to be fit for service.

@jp_gillespie_ That contrast works really well, protecting something so important while just wanting a normal life. Those two goals feel like they’re bound to pull against each other at some point.
Does protecting Eden make “normal” impossible for him?

Siege of Eden: The Cost of Self-Sacrifice
We explore the story of Siege of Eden, a tale about Tiberius Thornback, a protector so devoted to sacrificing himself for his civilization that everyone has forgotten he's sacrificing anything at all.
We discuss how Eden's society is built on one fundamental law: individual desire is weakness, and erasing yourself for the collective is strength.
We examine the real conflict, not the siege at the fortress walls, but the internal struggle of a man paying an unbearable price that society refuses to acknowledge. We question whether a civilization built on self-erasure truly deserves to survive.

Most stories fail before the first act ends.
Not because the plot is weak. Because the writer gave their characters a goal but forgot to give them a reason.
External desire moves the story. Emotional desire makes the reader care.
Thornheart’s goal is to conquer Eden. His why, restoring honor and glory to his people, is what makes him impossible to dismiss as a villain.
Give every character a why. The story does the rest.
What’s the emotional desire driving your protagonist?

Genre is a contract with the reader.
Most writers think the rule is simple, deliver what the genre promised. It isn’t.
A horror story that ends with everyone safe and the monster explained feels like a betrayal. But a tragedy with a happy ending can land harder than the sad version.
The contract is not the ending. It is the feeling the story trained you to expect.
Break the training and you break the contract. Honor the training and the rule stops mattering.
So which one is the lie, the safe horror or the happy tragedy?

You think your story is about the plot.
It isn’t.
Something is broken at the center. A wound that existed before page one. A belief the protagonist carries into every scene about themselves that is wrong.
The plot is just the pressure that forces it open.
Every story that has ever stayed with you find the wound underneath it. It’s always there.
What’s the core wound in your story?

Siege of Eden cover art??
My artist did this as an homage to McFarlane ‘89 and I haven’t stopped staring at it.
The book is coming. 👁️

Influence is not theft. Imitation is theft.
The difference is what you add.
I don’t study great stories to copy them. I study them to find the mechanism underneath. Why does that scene land? What structural choice produces that emotional result?
Understand the mechanism. Use it. Push it further than the original did.
Borrow the architecture. Bring your own materials.
What story taught you the most about how to write?
