Scilla is so interesting and you connect with this character (and some others) right away! Scilla is posing as a boy to save herself (not a spoiler). The inner dialogue is so well done. It endears the reader to the character. #ppspdspot

Mom said she left Kast too early and doesn't remember her parents. I am really curious about the end of this book. We'll discuss the last parts next week to end February. #ppspdspot

"Let us begin by disarming our language." Yes! I recently pulled this off to my desktop. . .it's amazing how many 'innocent idioms' are rooted in violence. . . . I have used these myself and without a thought. They are an automatic part of our language. But I want to be more sensitive about them.

Pope Leo XIV in a very practical Lenten Message to all Christians says: “I would like to invite you to a very practical and frequently unappreciated form of abstinence: that of refraining from words that offend and hurt our neighbor. Let us begin by disarming our language, avoiding harsh words and rash judgement, refraining from slander and speaking ill of those who are not present and cannot defend themselves. Instead, let us strive to measure our words and cultivate kindness and respect in our families, among our friends, at work, on social media, in political debates, in the media and in Christian communities. In this way, words of hatred will give way to words of hope and peace.” Full text here: #en" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">press.vatican.va/content/salast…
