Why would a team like England, of equal strength and talent to Argentina, go completely into a prevent defense with so much time to go? Makes no sense to me. But I’m a casual. So explain it to me like I’m 10.

This is one where the soccer people just say: “Well that’s the way it is…” and then launch into a stump speech full of justifications and condescension. The American sports consumer just will never accept this level of absurdity. It’s why we constantly tweak and mold our rules in every sport to be proportionate and sensible. Unpopular hot take -- penalty kicks to decide a soccer game is stupid. Akin to basketball settling a game on a free throw-shooting contest or football with field-goal kicking contest or baseball being settle with a home run derby.
