A new #analysis explores the impacts of a change to higher #education financing proposed in the Senate’s reconciliation bill that would hold higher education programs accountable for #students’ earnings outcomes. Explore the key findings. urbn.is/4lnbVFf

House Republicans' proposed loan repayment plan would be a significant change from existing IDR options. @kblagg @delislealleges and I looked at what it would do to monthly and total payments, effects for families, and who could be better or worse off: urban.org/research/publi…

Looks like US News might be using the wrong earnings stat on their site? What says 6 years after grad lines up with what Scorecard has as 6 years after entry, and is much less than Scorecard's 10 years after entry stat, which would be close to 6 years after grad. Here's Princeton

@delislealleges @StudentLoanTrav Yes this is correct. If interest is $600, there would be a principal subsidy on any payment less than $1200. A payment of $1100, for example, would result in principal decreasing by $550 instead of $500.

@StudentLoanTrav My understanding is the first scenario is correct. In the second scenario ($600 required payment) there would still be a principal payment, in this case $300. @js_cohn, thoughts?

New @urbaninstitute brief is out that looks at the student loan repayment terms in the House College Cost Reduction Act. The bill includes a new income-driven repayment plan. Here's what it does: urban.org/research/publi…

A few reforms could address the risk of default and prevent unnecessary financial strain for those who do default. Here are three possible steps: urban.org/urban-wire/thr…

Most borrowers in groups vulnerable to default had debt amounts under $20,000 and may have been expecting their full balances to be forgiven before payments resumed. Restarting payments without loan forgiveness leaves a disproportionate share of these borrowers with debt.

Now that most borrowers will be returning to repayment without loan forgiveness, the student loan system needs more protections for borrowers vulnerable to default. urban.org/urban-wire/thr…

With the Supreme Court striking down loan forgiveness & student loan payments set to restart in September, Jason Cohn writes that “reforms are needed to ensure the loan system can work better for borrowers most vulnerable to default.” urbn.is/3Xu13e1

In a new @urbaninstitute analysis, I take a look at the earnings test in the House Republican short-term Pell proposal. I find only 1 in 5 vocational programs would pass the test, and it would limit Pell access more for women than for men: urban.org/research/publi…

.@js_cohn & @caityoung11: Proposed student debt relief policies could speed up the path to #homeownership for some student loan borrowers. They could help by lowering DTI ratios, allowing borrowers to save down payments, and improving credit histories. urbn.is/3UfgRPO

The new high school earnings test in the Biden admin's gainful employment rule is tough enough that there's no added value in the debt-to-earnings test. It is redundant. Raises lots of questions. New @urbaninstitute analysis w/ @js_cohn. urban.org/urban-wire/new…
