Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦, in recent years, decided to reactivate the M61 Vulcan (20 mm) rotary cannon on its F-15SA fighter jets after it had been removed in some earlier variants. The cannon is inexpensive, fires thousands of rounds per minute, and creates an effective “wall of fire” against slow, low-flying Iranian drones. The gun allows for multiple engagements in a single mission without depleting expensive missiles, making it well-suited for defending wide areas such as the Eastern Province and oil fields. The attached video from the Saudi Ministry of Defense demonstrates this. Result: Proven success in downing dozens of drones in a single mission at low cost, while preserving missiles for larger threats. Key military lesson: Sometimes, “older” weapons are smarter and more cost-effective when confronting new threats.
