GW10: 79
Rank: 254
I wanted to bring in a 3rd ARS player this week and the obvious choice was a defensive one (I already had Saka and Gabriel). Players in my team that I wanted to move on here were Vicario (GK) and Pedro Porro (DEF).
TOT have been outperforming their expected data this season, their attack is in reality weak, unable to progress the ball through a midfield of Bentancur and Palhinha as they struggle to pass forwards. This hurts both in terms of attacking returns (for Porro), and defensive returns (clean sheets for both).
My original plan was to do the GK move as the cheapest route, but with Raya now up to £5.8 he was the same price as Calafiori, with Timber being £0.3 more (Saliba wasn't considered due to lack of attacking threat).
When we think about chasing upside (as we want to if we want very high ranks), with GKs we have saves and penalty saves, and with DEFs we have attacking returns and DEFCON. With a bad TOT attack, this hurts the upside of Porro more than it does Vicario so I decided on the DEF change.
On predicted points sites, Calafiori is (by far) the lowest rated in the ARS DEF, as his minutes are judged to be less secure. However, as long as hes starting and getting 60+ to reach the clean sheet points, this is ok. This can even be an advantage as he can lock in a clean sheet before being subbed and a goal against occurring. Where this would be bad is for any player we hope to get DEFCON points (doesn't apply here).
Given I no longer care about the minutes beyond 60 with this, the way I then compare them is to equalise their minutes to give me a realistic output of their attacking threat when both on the pitch. Once I do this, Calafiori has a small lead.
The real question is whether either he or Timber will be dropped at some point. How important are they to the first team this season? There are 2 ways to answer this.
The first, for people who actually like football, is to listen to people like x.com/GrationHarvey who has done multiple youtube videos on their setup this season (they are both important).
The other way is to just pick them because they are currently starting and assume this will continue, only changing your view once you're proved wrong.
As a poker analogy, if I know that a player is going to mostly call all my bets, I should keep betting with all my good hands, and I should never bluff. If I know that they mostly fold when I bet, I should keep betting (bluffing) with all my weak hands. We should only stop this when we have proof that they have changed their strategy. We would say that by not doing this, you are leaving money on the table.
Or in football terms, if you have a corner routine that is working, it is *by far* the best strategy to use this *exact same routine every single time* until you see proof the opponent has adjusted. You already know it works. It annoys me when teams change their corner routine after scoring from the last one because most opponents will not make immediate adjustments (they have trained their defensive setup a certain way all week), and its only once they adjust this that the relative weakness in their setup will move elsewhere.
Given all this, I decided on Calafiori. However, if he and Timber had been exactly equal, how would I then choose? It would be, 1 - Who is cheapest? (so better value), 2 - What is the ownership? (I'd then choose the lower owned as the differential points are more valuable to me when upside chasing). In both cases Calafiori comes out on top here.
