Fun fact: back in the 1990s, actors on Checkmate earned royalties... in pounds, no less. Our industry was actually heading somewhere until desperation crept in and folks started giving away everything.

@idhebor Another interesting thing is how Desert Blues serves as a companion genre to a lot of American genres like blues, rock and whatever Carlos Santana does. I'd really love to experience what it feels like to find that genre for the first time again.

The year I discovered the desert blues and the philosophy of its players, I learned a little about life and my art found a deeper spirit

@idhebor It seems endless in how many ideological underpinnings it can carry. One moment, Tinariwen is letting you know they miss home and using their guitar as a physical metaphor for the wars they've gone through, and in the same song, the videos are looking like sci-fi masterpieces.

@idhebor True, true. For me, it was hearing Savane by Ali Farka Touré for the first time. The sound felt like open skies and slow winds. It kind of even changed how I see musicals integration in films.

“Arrow of God” looking at “Things Fall Apart” getting all the credit it deserves just because it arrived six years earlier.

I am so pleased to share this gorgeous cover of the Canadian edition of my forthcoming book Contraband Bodies---a personal record of diasporic encounter as well as other Black migrants entangled in exilic plights. Thanks for everyone who has contributed to this literary journey.

@Catchoris I've seen 71. I work in Nollywood and I live in Nigeria. I'm sure I have 5 friends who work in Nollywood and have seen more.

I'll be surprised to find that a Nigerian born, raised, and living in Nigeria has seen up to 58 films in the NYT list of Best 100 Movies of the century. It's certainly impossible that more than 9 such persons work in Nollywood. Based on what is produced. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
