This really pisses me off. I just emptied the receipts from my wallet and I notice this. Last night the waitress gave me my tab, but failed to mention that there was an automatic gratuity of 20%. I paid with "The machine" and gave her another 20% (which was on a total that already included GST and the first tip). So on a $24 tab, I paid $1.20 in GST and a $10.80 tip (45%). To me, that's a waitress that's not being honest, and The Derrick Gin Mill in Calgary just lost a client.
