I sometimes get feedback on my work that sounds like: “that’s new—and new is scary”. It’s fine to be pragmatic.
But over the long term that shit wears on interns and early career designers to the point of burning them out and teaching them to never crack the grid or break the system. I think we should tell every intern to completely break the system at least once in every project just to remind them that we’re all just drawing a bunch of boxes. Draw them your way and see what happens.

Today at work I realized that ideas kinda show up when I'm drawing boxes and rounding the corners by hand. Love the new tools, but also love spending time peering into the unknown when clicking around the canvas.

My son showed me two mugs he had crafted from clay, commenting on how much they differed in precision. They were made 3 months apart.
“It’s like they were made by two different people”, he said. I silently smiled at both the truth and self-reflectiveness of that statement.
