Having covered the Ghana Premier League for many years, the past decade has left me with one unavoidable conclusion: we are simply not improving the product. Despite occasional flashes of individual brilliance on the pitch, the league as a whole has stagnated, and in several critical areas, it has even regressed.
The biggest problem is a clear lack of genuine interest from the GFA and most clubs in developing and protecting their own product. Year after year, the same fundamental issues persist, almost as if they are accepted as normal:
• Poor marketing and fan engagement that fails to sell the league to local audiences and give players/clubs the needed exposure
• Substandard broadcasting with inconsistent coverage, and limited accessibility to games and highlight shows
• Questionable officiating that continues to erode trust in the integrity of the competition.
• Weak sponsorship
activation and poor commercial performance, limiting the financial growth clubs desperately need.
• Alarmingly low stadium attendance, driven by low match-day activation, poor stadium infrastructure, inconvenient kick-off times, and a general loss of excitement.
• Persistent security concerns at match venues that make attending games feel more like a risk than a celebration. Instead of addressing these core issues head-on, the FA and clubs repeatedly find new ways whether through poor decision-making, short-term thinking, or outright negligence to make the league less attractive to fans, sponsors, investors, and potential talents.
The result is a self-inflicted cycle: a league with immense potential that continues to undersell itself, disappoint its loyal supporters, and fail to realize its true value both on and off the pitch.
