You've obviously never played basketball. The vertical leap test is different from playing in an actual game. You don't have the ball in your hands when you're performing the vert test. You get to swing both arms freely to create more upward momentum. It's called physics. In games Jordan wanted to dunk quickly in heavy traffic so he wouldn't get blocked or undercut. On breakaway dunks MJ went for distance over sheer height. On defense you're reacting in a split second and jumping quickly, and usually don't have a chance to fully crouch and explode upwards to maximize your vert. MJ did have to duck his head a few times during dunk contests so he wouldn't hit the rim. The real answer is, who cares? 46", 48", 44"...it doesn't matter. It's completely irrelevant in an actual game. Hang time and midair body control are much more important than max vertical...and MJ was the best ever at both.
