I’m heartbroken by the loss of my friend Kirsty Duncan. Kirsty was curious, generous, and deeply committed to helping others. She believed in knowledge, compassion, and service, and she brought those values into every conversation and every fight she took on. I learned a great deal from her, and I was lucky to call her a friend. I’ll miss her greatly. My thoughts are with her family, her friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

Horrified by the antisemitic terror attack that has stolen the lives of 11 people at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach today in Australia. Canada stands with the people of Australia and Jewish people everywhere in sorrow, and determination never to bow to terrorism, violence, hatred and intimidation. Hanukkah is a time of light amidst the darkness, and a remembrance of the resilience of the Jewish people. May we all support and strengthen that resilience to protect our Jewish communities and to ensure more fundamentally that all people can thrive in every aspect of our society.

Je suis profondément horrifié par l’attentat terroriste antisémite perpétré aujourd’hui lors d’un événement de Hanoucca à Bondi Beach, en Australie, qui a coûté la vie à 11 personnes innocentes. Le Canada se tient aux côtés du peuple australien et des communautés juives partout dans le monde, dans leur peine, mais aussi dans la détermination de ne jamais céder au terrorisme, à la violence, à la haine et à l’intimidation. Hanoucca est une fête de lumière face à l’obscurité et un rappel de la résilience du peuple juif. En ces moments tragiques, je réaffirme mon engagement à soutenir et à protéger les communautés juives, et à défendre une société où chacune et chacun peut vivre en sécurité, dans la dignité et la liberté.

Kirsten Hillman is a real patriot who has served Canadians proudly and effectively in the face of unprecedented challenges against our economy and our sovereignty.     My first meeting with Kirsten was on my first official trip as Prime Minister, mere weeks after being elected, as she briefed me in the Philippines on the complexities and opportunities of our trade with Asia. Her skill, toughness, and commitment to her country shone through from the very beginning. After navigating through Canada’s negotiation of the CPTPP, helping renegotiate NAFTA, and getting steel and aluminum tariffs lifted by Washington, Kirsten earned her place as Ambassador to the United States.   As Ambassador, Kirsten worked tirelessly to build up our economy and resolve multiple trade disputes. She promoted North American security, helped fight against climate change, navigated COVID-19, and quietly and effectively contributed to the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor.    Kirsten, my dear friend, thank you for your outstanding service. All the best to you, Duncan, and your two sons in the next chapter.
