Who is the QB from this era who will make people react like this Elway debate 30 years from now?
- Stats are meh (even accounting for era)
- Accolades aren’t there (All-Pro/MVPs)
- But a “you had to be there” QB

I find it odd that John Elway has 0 first team All-Pro selections. People will gaslight you and tell you he was some top 5 QB OAT when he was arguably not even top 5 in his era most of his career. His legacy was a inflated when he won back to back Super Bowls off Terrell Davis’ legs (7 straight post season games over 100 yds) a Rod Smith 80 yd house call that was under-thrown, and 4 turnovers from his defense gifting him his SB MVP.

@rolloqtomasi @Peter_Bukowski You’re not gonna hear me dissing Marino. He’s an all-time great. But Elway got similar to worse rosters further repeatedly. Stats do matter but winning should matter more. It’s the difference between Patrick Mahomes vs. Lamar Jackson/Josh Allen now. Just is.

@Peter_Bukowski He was on Super Bowl Sunday. Twice. Beat Goliath — The 2007 Pats. Marino faced Goliath, too. The 1985 Bears. Didn’t do great. Does that make him better? No. But it gets him to the HoF & it matters. Stat guys can talk about Rodgers til the cows come home but teams underperformed.

@DaPres_ @awfulannouncing Troy is a top 15-20 QB. But he had one of the most talented teams, offense & defense, in NFL history. Again, much of Elway’s argument hinges on what he didn’t have until he had Terrell Davis & Shannon Sharpe, Rod Smith, etc.

The John Elway PR is a perfect storm: • Highly-touted NCAA QB people expected and wanted to be great • Highlight-reel QB but inconsistent on accuracy/decisions • Bad play was overlooked because GWDs make better highlight packages • Lack of statistical analysis for QBs in his era hid flaws • The Broncos fabricated his clutch success relative to other top QBs to create a false narrative as the NFL's comeback king • Took advantage of a weak AFC in the 80s, especially Martyball teams in crunch time • Crushed in the SB 3x, so people figured it was his team instead of him throwing the game away • Won at the end with much better stats on a truly stacked team, which helps people say he always had it in him • Even in his first SB win, he played like crap, but one helicopter twirl highlight gets immortalized while Terrell Davis and the defense that stopped the 3x MVP were the real heroes • Hollywood ending to win SB MVP in your last game He's the #1 case in NFL history of a QB where people willingly ignore the huge volume of bad plays/games/seasons and focus squarely on the best moments of his career. Things would be a lot different if we gave other QBs the same grace.

@ChiArunavo @vincent_elric Very good point. I can barely remember who Elway’s tackles were pre-Shanahan years. Ken Lanier? Other linemen: Keith Bishop? Doug Widell? They were no hogs.

Think of how great Bruce Smith was & how many problems he created. Well Miami drafts Richmond Webb in 1990 & he does wonderfully in containing Smith for the next 6-7 years. Meanwhile Denver those years had a revolving door at LT until they traded for Gary Zimmerman.

Elway was always overrated. Even when he played. He wasn’t better than Dan Marino. Those later years Super Bowls made yall believe he was something he was not

Elway is now underrated because of stats Howard Mudd ranked Elway #1 in the passing era (since 1978 rules changes) Mudd was with Peyton all those years too That is saying something

It’s a fun debate on here but Aaron Rodgers will end his career with nearly double the passing touchdowns and half the interceptions as John Elway. Numbers don’t lie.

I adored John Elway as a player but this was literally just 25% of Aaron Rodgers' career.
